The Forgotten Lands

The Forgotten Lands, formerly known as the continent of Zeuwera, is the southeastern most continent on Yrnath. Once home to vibrant forests and seemingly endless fields teeming with life, the continent is now little more than a place of ruin and suffering. Since the region's destruction during The Ascendancy, the Forgotten Lands are covered in thick layers of hard obsidian, which when combined with the weakened planar web that hangs over the region results in a near-constant deluge of apocalyptic events. From volcanoes and earthquakes to hurricanes and tornadoes, the remaining chunks of the continent are constantly being battered by the worst nature has to offer.

History

Zeuwera's Collapse

Main Article: Zeuwera   In the year 1,416 AB, mages of the Talvarran Empire attempted to usurp the powers of the gods in an attempt to "correct" the damage done by their Bokreni counterparts at the end of the Lost Age. While they were largely successful in their aims, mantling and subsequently superseding their human gods (now recognized as the D'Nalsi pantheon), the attempt to fix the damage resulted in the planes of Rokaea and Teilka fusing together incorrectly, heavily damaging aspects of the newly-reformed Iklegarre. While much of the damage ended up being relegated to the shard-plane of Kadamas, some damage had remained on the surface of Iklegarre, the clearest disaster being the complete destruction of Zeuwera, resulting in the shattered islands known as the Forgotten Lands.

Geography

There's substantial debate over whether the Forgotten Lands should be classified as a single continent or as a large series of separate archipelagoes, though for the purposes of this account, such distinctions are irrelevant beyond a passing mention.

Ecology

What remains of the Zeuweran ecosystem is completely buried by a layer of obsidian, as thick as seven meters in some places. While substantial, a recent expedition to the island discovered that the ecosystem beneath the obsidian appears to be in some form of stasis rather than being simply buried and killed. Further expeditions to the island are necessary to confirm these findings.   The fauna of the Forgotten Lands consists almost entirely of flying creatures, allowing them to safely avoid the various natural disasters that plague the island. At the top of the region's food chain is the obsidian dragon, whose scales allow it to easily blend in to the vast obsidian fields upon which they reside.
