Magic

The word “magic,” when properly used, does not refer to the energies that power spells or rituals; magic is the act of using those energies to effect change in the world. To put it simply, a magician does magic; that magic uses magical energies.   There are multiple, distinct, non-interchangeable magical energies which will be explained below. For the moment, understand that all magical energies are present in the living world, are naturally invisible, and are tangible to the honed perception of a magician.   The act of magic is performed by a magician’s will reaching out into the world to seize and channel magical energies through a conduit. The magical energies are then shaped by the magician’s will into whatever shape or pattern required for the spell or ritual being cast. The process can be likened to inhaling in order to produce words, but the language-shaping mouth of the magician is their will. For many races, most notably the Aeldvari, creating magic is as natural and innate as speaking. Other races must learn to conquer their muteness, one fat-tongued sound--or clumsy spell--at a time.
