Ironglass

It's not just glass. It's ironglass! Clear enough to be almost invisible, strong enough to break stone, sharp enough to cut you in half! It's it beautiful, isn't it?

Properties

Material Characteristics

Ironglass looks like ordinary glass, with light blue shades inside it. It is clear light crystal.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Ironglass is found cold to the touch, and is not a good heat conductor. It is harder than steel, but can be scratched by diamond. Ironglass is resistent to acids and is not flamable. It shows a well defined crystal structure, and formes very sharp edges, sharper than what is possible to achieve with steel. It can be used to channel magic energy.

Geology & Geography

Ironglass is quarried on the grand plains, where it is found in form of sand. It is then brought to Vapore, where it is crafted with a secret procedure.

Origin & Source

Ironglass is extracted from opaque sand extracted in the quarries. This sand is dangerous to handle and can cause breathing system failure if inhaled.

Life & Expiration

If melted, ironglass loses its strenght and turns into fragile glass with colored shades inside. This kind of glass find vast applications in jewelry because of its beauty.

History & Usage

Discovery

Ironglass was first discovered by Dragonborns living in the western territories, but human artisans mastered the crafting process and brought it to Vapore. In Vapore, ironglass was made stronger and clearer, using a secret annealing.

Everyday use

Ironglass is used mostly to craft weapons. The Silver Plates, the city guards of Vapore, are known for wielding Ironglss halberds.

Industrial Use

Refined ironglass is strong, but it can't form sharp edges needed to make a useful weapon. When refined, ironglass is tempered: it is heated until a specific point and then rapidly cooled. If done correctly this process reinforces the structure of the glass, but if it goes wrong the ironglass turns opaque and becomes fragile.

Refinement

Ironglass in quarried in form of dust, which needs to be melted in special forges in order to turn it into refined ironglass.

Manufacturing & Products

When refined, ironglass is strong as steel and clear as water, and is used to craft windows, lenses and glass utensils. After the temper it forms extremely sharp edges and is used mainly to craft weapons.

Byproducts & Sideproducts

If the temper process is done poorly, ironglass becomes frail and opaque.

Hazards

Before refining, ironglass sand is highly toxic. If breathed it can cause spasms, paralisys and lungs failure. Only dragonborns seem to be immune to these dangerous effects.
After the temper process it can be lethal via stab wounds.

Environmental Impact

Ironglass is extremely durable, which means that any quantity left in the environment will be around for a long period of time, and its sharp edges won't break, causing hidden hazards.

Reusability & Recycling

Ironglass can be melt, but it loses its strength and becomes more fragile. In exchange for losing its hardness, it gains beautiful shades of color that make it a valuable material used in crafting jewelry. However if the melting process is done incorrectly it shatters with the change of temperature, and turns into dust.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Ironglass is sold in Vapore. It can be found at the market plaza or at the monthly market in the forgers district.

Law & Regulation

The distribution of ironglass is regulated by the Forgers' Guild, which sets the quality standards, the prices and the maximum produced quantity. The Forgers' Guild guarantees a high standard of quality, but there are artisans who reuse to join the guild, and have more trouble finding buyers.
