Alderman’s Tankard

The first buildings in Anuzim were made up of washed up and dilapidated ships. Though most of these buildings either collapsed or were demolished over the years, several still exist on the edge of the harbour. One of these buildings is the Alderman's Tankard. The pub is built from an overturned trireme, a long, low narrow building especially good for large gatherings. The original sails have since been replaced with large canvas sheets, and the structure enhanced with wooden frames. The pub was the city's first wooden building and the meeting place for the city's founders, including the sorcerer Nylvi.   As more ships washed up and the black adobe buildings sprung up around the Alderman's Tankard, the structure was repurposed as a drinking hall. It was a community building where locals gathered for marriages, parties, and celebrations throughout the generations since the building as first used. Over the years, as Anuzim became a centre for sea and desert trade, it became more standard for there to be more transients than locals visiting the halls within the overturned ship. An alderman, supposedly unhappy with the prevalence of foreigners, threw his tankard one night and it stuck to a stick in the wooden frame of the canvas tent front. The story stuck and the Alderman’s Tankard was birthed.   The Alderman’s Tankard, while dominated by traders and sailors, is also a center for local power. The mayor and his council do have an official meeting place, but they are often found meeting with private individuals. The Tankard has become the place for merchants and other private interests to rub shoulders with the officials. It is said any decision made in Anuzim, begins at the bottom of a tankard and finishes with signature at the bottom of a paper.
