Personal history

Maka was once a member of the "Crysta Sistas", a team of expert gem miners and security detail that worked for the Empire. The Crysta Sistas were originally a group of rogue duergar women warriors who rebelled and fled from the extremely patriarchal Duergar kingdom in the underdark beneath Brekor. They were bandits, before joining with Edith Checkovitch's forces during the conquest of Brekor, and subsequently, their own home kingdoms beneath it. Maka was not present for the events of the vanished pyramid, where the rest of her team was killed by Opal, Ira, and Raina before they stole the Pyramid of Tiamat. She continues to wear their symbol, a diamond with an embroidered "CS" on it, to remember her comrades.   Maka herself, as an artificer and alchemist, was a main contributor in the invention and refinement of black powder, which had rudimentary uses by Duergar society. Under the Empire's command, she worked alongside other experts in their fields, such as Welinda Sherben from the Okeanus Alliance, to eventually invent the original firearm prototypes. Maka is the one who taught Edith Checkovitch in their function and use, but after seeing the atrocities she went on to perform in Brekor and beyond using that technology, Maka swore off the creation of weapons entirely, retired from the military, and devoted her life to making mining explosives and equipment. She swore off having apprentices at the same time, but still can't resist giving advice and pointers when something peaks her interest.
