The Unhallowed Monument
– "Oh, no, don't get close to that!"This harmless looking monument is the source of lost of uneasiness among the local population and the reason why the Hillswatch road has seen so little locals traveling it in this part. Most locals prefer a trail that's taking a wide turn and bypasses the village on the side away from the road, to keep the junction that originally led to their village completely out of their sight. It's quite difficult to get an explanation out of them. Most refuse an answer straight away, others try to change the topic or distract the person asking somehow. Often another person not involved in the original conversation will immediately barge in and steer the conversation away from the topic, but all have one reason: nameless fear. Sometimes, when a traveler is able to drink the locals under the table and still keep their wits about them, they may be able to worm the story out of them: The monument mysteriously appeared one day, seemingly random stones stacked on each other in a way that almost feels impossible. No mortar or anything holds the stones together, and even violent storms weren't able to topple it. The folks of the area quickly felt uneasy around it and one day decided to take it apart. Nothing happened and there was nothing hidden in the foot of the monument like some had assumed, so they just left the stones lying around. The next day, however, the monument was back, just as gravity-defying as before. At first, the usual pranksters were suspected and got an ear full, but they insisted it wasn't them. They even destroyed the monument in front of everyone, but yet again the next day, it was back.
– "Why not? I'm tired of walking, and this is the only shade - hey! Don't be so rough!"
– "It's not much longer. Behind that hill is my village. DON'T touch that thing! No one knows what it is, but it can't be good!"
"Next night we tied 'em up, thinking they were just really good actors. It still came back! Nothing we tried worked. We buried the rocks - they were dug up the next day. We carried them away - they came back somehow. We even threw them into the river! Next day they were back, still a little sandy from the river bottom. Ol' Mitchell suggested we watch the monument to see who does it. I told him, good idea, Mitch! You go right ahead! Would you have gone there and stayed? Who knows what happens there. No sir, not me! Mitch didn't go either, what a surprise..."
