The Fourfold Way

The Fourfold Way is an order of martial monks from Nehamen. They are ascetics who live a spartan lifestyle, and most of their day is devoted to drills and training in unarmed combat. The rest of it is spent contemplating the nature of the four classical elements.
Monks of the Fourfold Way exist to hunt down and destroy incursion into the Prime Material Plane by outsiders, mostly those from the Elemental Planes. Usually, this means destroying elementals, mephits and djinn who escaped control after being summoned by wizards, but occasionally means fighting off incursions by elemental lords, demons and devils.
Monasteries are usually deep within the desert wastes of Nehemen, far from the coast and any civilization, usually supported by deep wells, and rarely by elemental magics. Most monks encountered are wandering outside the monastery, either on a mission or search of one.
Fourfold Way Monks spend much time in contemplation of the elements, of their role in the universe, and the necessity of maintaining the balance between the elements that comprise the composition of the universe. Through constant meditation and battle against elementals and other outsiders, Fourfold Way Monks gain mighty elemental powers. Some of the more powerful monks are even able to harness the energies of the quasi-elemental and para-elemental planes. Only a handful of the mightiest monks are able to tap into the planes of positive and negative energy.
