Jawm Feast Foods

The annual Jawm Al-Nahr festival in Akhang-Ahvar celebrates the return of the river waters to the underground network of caves and streams after the rainfall in the western mountains. Tourists flock to the desert city to join in the party and to taste the famed street foods made only for this feast. Traders come for the festival and bring many rare ingredients that the Akhangi cooks and vendors prepare as only they know how. Some examples of these foods are:
Goat Head kebab - a delicately spiced roll of grilled minced goat head meat on bamboo skewers, topped with a pair of fiery chilis in the form of goat horns. Said to be good for the libido, the flavours are strong and rich.
Fae Minted Yogurt - fermented goats milk is flavoured with succulent mint leaves and served in cups fashioned from dried gourds. The fragrant dessert is often decorated with fine silver dust which gives it a sparkling sheen in the sunlight.
Insect Cakes - children rush around the watering holes and oases with fine nets catching massive swarms of insects that breed in the mud. These insects are then crushed into shiny black patties and griddled in goat fat and sold on the streets. They are a great source of protein and the flavours are nutty and spicy, with a crisp, crumbly texture.
Dragon Bread - the most popular street food at the time of the festival is the highly-spiced, bright red Dragon Bread. It is made from dates, maize flour brought from the coast, red and yellow spices and the eggs of ground-dwelling birds, somewhat like chickens but larger. They lay huge clutches of eggs in communal nurseries that are only harvested for this food, once per year. Many tourists visit simply to taste this bread and are rarely disappointed, though the recipe is kept a well-guarded secret.
