Stunted Aura
A stunted Aura is a condition which prevents the host from manipulating or sensing Aura around them. Unlike Aura Winking, a being does not lose their own Aura or become unaffected by Aura manipulation, they simply lose access to it. It is believed that one in a hundred people have a stunted Aura but only one in every one hundred of those is naturally occurring. A person can be born with a stunted Aura and it is believed to be hereditary, in part. This belief has caused some to fear having children with those affected as it could prevent a better life for their potential offspring. A few nobles have also accepted this as fact and have begun denying Birthenrite to those affected by this condition.
Aura stunting is, however, generally the result of a botched awakening. Botched awakenings can occur naturally or through artificial stressors. These usually occur in instances where a guide is aggressive in their methods, but can also occur with the use of black market substances.
One of the major substances used in these black market awakenings is dragon stomach lining. It is believed that the lining is what aids a dragon in its ability to absorb and convert Aura and, as such, is sold at a premium to any who can afford it. Some find lining at a deal. These "deals" are usually indicative of fraudulent product, not to suggest that the real product works. These practices are common due to awakenings being the only way to manipulate Aura for magical effect. Some sects of churches, as well as some noble families, have been known to put their followers and children through these types of awakenings. One past noble family in particular utilized both methods simultaneously to hedge the odds in their favor. This ended with most of the house unable the manipulate Aura in any fashion and their house swiftly lost their standing.
There is currently no cure for a stunted Aura. The Æriakh Academy as well as the Kantarin Academy of Aura have never-the-less been experimenting and researching tirelessly to cure this condition. The two schools and most high-ranking practitioners believe that without intervention this could become a common malady among the population, if not entirely prevent the sapient races at large from using Aura.
