The Temples of Zeus

While the Norse gods may prefer to be honored in action and word more than material, The Greek gods prefer material worship. Grand statues made with precious materials and grand temples dot all of the Greek Isles. These gods tend to be jealous and do not like sharing their temples, so there are usually different temples dedicated to a different god or goddess in a single settlement.   This particular temple was made to honor Zeus, the head of all Greek gods. Its outside is decorated with lightning bolts designs while a giant golden statue of Zeus resides within. Many offerings are offered daily here as well as grand feasts and parties.

Purpose / Function

The Temple of Zeus serves multiple different purposes. It houses Zeus' clergy and provides space to ply their craft. This temple is also used in religious ceremonies such as Holy Day feasts, weddings, coming-of-age ceremonies, clergy ordinations and oaths, and other events significant to Zeus. Tithes and other offerings are collected here as well as aid for those in need and even the rare miracle here and there.

Architecture

The Greek temples are pretty universally made of stone with great carved columns leading to a decorated roof and painted ceiling. Many of the columns are decorated with paint or intricate carved designs. Multi-colored banners hang from the roof at the entrances to the temples. The inside of the structure usually has a wide, open room with a large statue depicting the patron god of the temple.

History

The Temple of Zeus in Heraclanos was said to be built by the hero Heracles himself to honor his father Zeus. The legend states that the demigod carried all the stone himself to the location where all the best masons and architects of the time built the temple. The golden statue of Zeus is said to have been made of the melted awards that were awarded to Heracles over his life. Before Heracles disappeared, Zeus proclaimed his approval for the temple and vied to protect it as long as his people revere it and him.
