Daagnhir

Carved into the side of Bogrival Mountain is the gate to Daagnhir, an ancient Dwarven city dating back several thousand years. The entrance to the city is a pair of colossal rectangular stone doors, thirty feet high and twenty feet wide. Angular ridges carved into the stone create the image of two massive Dwarves, axes crossed across the two doors. Four large stone constructs stand motionless, two in front of each gate.   Passing through the gates is a long, downward sloped corridor. The ceiling is about 60 feet high and the corridor is roughly 200 feet long. Lining the walls on both sides are hundreds of polished statues, each one with a placard at its base stating who the statue is of and why they have a statue. The majority of the statues are of Dwarves, but closer to the end of the tunnel there are the occasional statues of members of other races.   At the end of the entry hall it opens up into the oldest and largest Dwarven city, housed within a massive cavern. The cavern walls above are lined with building after building entrenched in the rock. Walkways circle the walls and numerous bridges span across chasms hundreds of feet deep. Beneath lays the city core, a sprawling city decending into the rock below. The air is warm, the smell of forge smoke mixes in with the earthy scents of the mountain. The cave is lit, a pale orange glow radiating from the walls as Gidrakkia, a bioluminescent fungi, reacts with the humid air. Pillars with glass orbs are spread throughout the city, also containing this glowing fungi. Rivers have been carved through the city to provide water.   Near the center of the city, a tall castle-like structure stands out. A large bridge stretches over a wide river that flows infront of it. Flanking each side of the bridge are large Dwarven statues, hammers in hand, as if standing guard over the keep.

Demographics

Races:
  • Dwarves make up 94% of the population
  • Gnomes make up 3% of the population
  • The remaining 3% is a mixture of races, mostly half-Orc, halfling, and Dragonborn.
Professions:
  • Mining, smithing, and stone-masonry are the most dominant professions.
  • Merchants and military/guards are not far behind.

Government

Despite Kioterra having a democratic government, which includes Dwarven representatives, Daagnhir refused to relinquish their internal monarchy. For matters that affect Kioterra, the Dwarven king still must answer to the Kioterran Council, but for matters which are contained to the Dwarven populace within Daagnhir, the king has say.

Defences

  • The city resides within a mountain, providing a natural defense.
  • The city only has entry through one gate, which is heavily reinforced.
  • Daagnhir boasts the largest single-race military force in Kioterra.
  • The creation of self-aware stone golems, known as Groshail, provide an additional defensive force within the city.

Industry & Trade

  • The primary exports from Daagnhir are weapons, armor, tools, stone, and ore.
  • The primary imports, mostly received from Ithomhir, is food, mostly fruits and meat. (While Daagnhir does produce some of its own food, after the Knelik wars, the city's population had grown at such a rapid rate, they were no longer able to sustain it themselves.)

Infrastructure

With assistance from the Gnomes, Daagnhir was the first Dwarven city to have functional elevators to transport its citizens up and down the various layers of the city. These same elevators were later built into Stoneforge.

History

Daagnhir is the oldest Dwarven settlement in Kioterra, settled in 784 BC. Originally settled by 3 clans working together, Daagash, Agnek, and Orthir. After construction was well under way, they merged parts of each of their names when naming the city.   During the Knelik wars, Daagnhir withstood numerous assaults, even against seemingly impossible odds. As a result, it became a bastion of hope for many of the Dwarves during that time, resulting in a flood of refugees from the other Dwarven cities that had fallen.

Architecture

Many of the free-standing buildings are brick-built structures. The buildings carved into the walls were hollowed out holes and then brick walls built up within them.   Most buildings and accents tie in with the Dwarven art style of rigid, angular lines carved in to create a picture.

Geography

Carved into the Bogrival Mountain, Daagnhir is sheltered from much of the harsh weather in the mountains. The cavern the initial construction took place in has been expanded drastically to fit the ever-growing population of the city.

Natural Resources

Jewels, Ore, and stone from the mines beneath the city are Daagnhir's primary resources. Water from underground rivers carved through the city, as well as wells bored in key locations provides water to the city. Gidrakkia, a bio-luminescent fungi grows on the inner walls of the mountain, providing both fresh air and light for Daagnhir. Outside the city, in the mountains, there are various forms of wildlife which can be hunted.
