Magical Storm

A magical storm is a naturally occurring storm of magical energy. These storms are quite rare and can range from small and harmless to massive and devastating. The effects of a magical storm are quite unpredictable, and include but are not limited to:
  • The creation of magical or semi-magical beings.
  • The partial or complete destruction of physical objects. (e.g. trees, walls, hills, etc.)
  • The partial or complete transmutation of physical objects. (e.g. trees, walls, hills, etc.)
  • A temporary magical "dead zone", where spellcasting is impossible. This is usually accompanied by increased effects just outside of the zone.
  • The creation of a portal to another plane.
It is not known what causes magical storms to occur, and they typically can only be accurately predicted a day or two before they occur. The presence of an incoming magical storm can be detected by specialized Storm Detection Pylons. Unfortunately, these can only detect an incoming storm and estimate the potential location and magnitude. More specific predictions can only be made by specially trained mages. Even the best of these mages can only make somewhat vague predictions. For instance, a mage might be able to determine that a storm is likely to involve transmutation, but not what will be transmuted or what it will be transmuted into.   There are two criteria by which magical storms are categorized: magnitude and destructiveness. Magnitude rankings are as follows:
  • Duchy
  • County
  • City
  • District
  • Block
  • Street
  • House
Destructiveness rankings are as follows:
  • Annihilation
  • Desolation
  • Cataclysm
  • Decimation
  • Ruin
  • Detriment
  • Irritant
  • Harmless
The vast majority of magical storms are among the lower three magnitude rankings and the lower four destructiveness rankings. The rankings become exponentially rarer the higher they get, and it is incredibly rare for a storm to be high on both rankings.   Currently, there is no way to prevent magical storms, although they can be mitigated by mages skilled in dispelling. Many mages have been researching ways to create area-of-effect Magic Inhibitors as a potential way to prevent them outright, with little success.
