Manananggal

Basic Information

Anatomy

Manananggals are shapeshifters that generally look like members of other humanoid races, but they change to their true form when hunting. In this form, they have tougher skin, bat-like wings sprouting from their backs, a tail with a stinger on the end that can inject a paralytic, claws on their hands, and fangs, similar to those of a Vampire. They can also detach from their lower body, and usually do while hunting.

Ecology and Habitats

Manananggals typically live among other humanoid races.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Manananggals are hematophagous.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Manananggal clans are typically led by a Master. The Master of a clan directs hunting, adjudicates disputes, and punishes rule-breakers.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Manananggal skin is sometimes used for leather, and their tails are prized among alchemists.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Manananggals have very good senses of sight and smell, and are otherwise average.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Manananggals are often desirable hosts for vampires because they are both hematophagous.

Civilization and Culture

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Manananggals live hidden within the societies of other races and are often influenced by them culturally. Manananggals will typically seek each other out and form clans to aid each other in hunting.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Most manananggals look down upon other races, considering them little more than food. Manananggals showing sympathy towards other races will usually be banished from their clans or sometimes even killed.   Manananggals are typically considered monsters, although they are sapient.   Many people conflate manananggals with vampires, believing them to be related or even one and the same. Vampires and manananggals are, in fact, completely unrelated.   Some people believe that all manananggals are female. They are not. The reason for this misconception is unknown.   Some people believe that manananggals are undead. This is untrue, and probably stems from a conflation with ghouls, who are also hematophagous.
