Souls

What souls are is widely debated. Some people believe they are simply what makes living things live, like a sort of battery. Others believe that souls also contain what makes a person who they are, their personality, memories, etc. Some people believe that the source of souls is divine, and others believe that they're something else. Not much scientific study of souls has been conducted both because of ethical issues surrounding the extraction of souls for research, and the practical issue of there not being a known way to actually directly examine a soul. Despite this, there are a few known things, such as the fact that a person cannot typically live without a soul, that they facilitate the use of Magic, and that they can be removed and placed into a Phylactery.
There are two types of souls: Conscientiam and Ignarus. Conscientia are the souls of sapient creatures, and Ignorantes are the souls of non-sapient creatures.
There are rumors of crystallized souls being used to create Homunculi, but these rumors are unconfirmed. It is unknown whether or not a crystallizing a soul is even possible.
