The city was the first colony that was built on mars after the terraforming project. It was to be the city that would focus on farming as earth was now not an option.
From here the settlement expanded and more and more settlements landed, the goal changed. It was now to be greater then earth, where earth was swallowed by it's lust for the spirits power the first settlers wanted to focus on the problem at hand, they were not alone in the universe.
This the Planets hit it's industrial boom villages became towns which become cities which became a metropolis, which turned into a megalopolis and evolved into a megaplex.
Science and technology was the focus and in doing so fueled the embers of an arms race to pull out the greatest and latest tech. Whether it was for civilians or military if you wanted to survive you had to keep up. If you couldn't what would you do when the Tuleons return, was the logic behind it.
