Human

Basic Information

Anatomy

Humans are bipedal four-limbed creatures with two arms and two legs.

Genetics and Reproduction

Humans can reproduce with other humans and most humanoid species (including elves and orcs). Human reproduction occurs between a male and female of the species. Females carry offspring for a typical gestation period of about seven to nine months.

Ecology and Habitats

Humans have been known to adapt to moderate climates of either hot or cold. However, they are generally unable to sustain living in extreme climates. Humans as an intelligent species tend to utilize the resources available to them, and they commonly warp the habitat to suit their needs. Given enough time, humans (along with most other intelligent humanoids) may crown the top of any given food chain or ecosystem.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Humans are omnivores, able to consume both plant-like matter and meat. They have the capability to hunt or forage and may stock their food sources in varied forms of storage. The ability of humans to defend its resources depends on the materials and technological advancement available to any given settlement.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

The exact characteristics of human faces depend on an individual's ancestry. The base structure involves two eyes located just below the forehead, a nose central on the face, a mouth located under the nose, and two ears at about level with their eyes. Generally, humans have mainly hairless faces barring males who can grow pronounced facial hair.

Humans tend to be the most populous race of humanoids on Varia, overall. They generally settle anywhere below the Kor Mountain ranges in the north and to the west of the continent's border with the Feylands.

Naming Traditions

Human names derive mainly from Varian Common and Arthinian. However, with Varia's history, the influence of other languages on naming has become relatively apparent.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Humans in Varia typically speak Varian Common, which includes derivatives of Arthinian. However, with the amalgamation of other humanoid races present in the continent, significant portions of the human populations of the continent are actually multi-lingual.

Historical Figures

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Humans have amicable, if not genial, relationships with most of the civilized humanoid races on Varia, which includes elves, dwarves, gnomes, halflings, and dragonborn.   Human hybrids receive about the same reception as their non-human ancestral race.   Orcs and half-orcs have notably received the ire of humans, as with other monstrous humanoids like goblins and kobolds.
