Rysmarckian Conquests

The Conflict

Prelude

As a prince, Balthazar I of Avon became a national icon through his staunch nationalistic views. His experience in Avon's army further endeared the prince to the nation's top military officials. During the final years of his late father's reign, Balthazar had already spearheaded reform that allocated more national resources to Avon's armed forces.

Balthazar I of House Rysmarck succeeded the throne to Avon in 3465 3E. During his coronation, the newly anointed monarch gave a speech that alluded to the nation's future military endeavors. In 3466 3E, less than a year after his succession, Balthazar I ordered the kingdom's military to launch a set of attacks on neighboring city-states that sought to assimilate them as Avonian territory. These military conflicts included clashing with the holdings of House Leitritter and their allied states. The kingdom of Avon continued this trend of attacking weaker states or otherwise annexing territory via alliances for several years until it had consolidated the lands comprising the central regions of Varia closest to the Titan's Lake.

In 3473 3E, King Balthazar III made a declaration that formally labeled the kingdom of Avon and its holdings as the Rysmarckian Empire. He subsequently took on the title of Emperor, becoming styled as Emperor Balthazar I. Scholars formally consider the Rysmarckian Conquests to have begun in 3474 3E when Avon made a declaration of war against the kingdom of Oleid to the northeast. Following the fall of the Oledian royal family and its annexation as a satellite state, Emperor Balthazar continued his military campaign to the west.

Outcome

In the span of twenty-four years, the Rysmarckian Empire has caused the collapse of the kingdoms of Oleid and Taillean. The Rysmarckians subsequently annexed the fallen kingdoms' territories as tightly run satellite states that hold fealty to the central state of Avon. The Rysmarckian Empire also succeeded in subduing Wiltide, a city-centered state known for its millennia of independence. Each instance of assimilation has led to the supplantation of previous structures as well as the destruction of the previous cultures focused on the deposed authorities.

In the latter half of 3498 3E, the Rysmarckian Empire seized control over the major mage colleges and magical institutions, including those found in Avington, Aldeville, Wiltide, and Ederton. Rysmarckian mages have also been witnessed using magic in direct military conflict. These acts have been seen as major transgressions against the Avon Accords, though no formal action has been taken against the Rysmarckians yet.
