Fishing Competition

Fishing Competition Rules

  Objective
Get the most points by catching fish in 10 rounds. Points are awarded based on the rarity multiplied by the weight of each fish caught. The player with the highest total points at the end of the competition wins.   1. Equipment and Setup
Tools Available:
  • Net: Allows you to catch multiple fish but has a short range.
  • Fishing Pole: A balanced tool with a chance to save a failed catch.
  • Spear/Bare Hands: Quick and efficient but can only hold 3 fish.
  • Trap: Allows for passive catching but requires perception to determine amount of success.
Cast Reel Special Considerations of Tool:
    2. Game Flow
  Turn Structure:
  • Each turn, players choose to either Cast or Reel.
  3. Casting
  Casting Roll:
  • Players roll a d20 to determine the rarity of the fish available.
  • Compare the player's roll to the DM’s roll (d20, no modifier).
  • If the player beats the DM’s roll, they catch the better fish of the two available for that DC range.
  • If the player's roll matches the DM’s roll, they are able to catch a legendary fish (Blue Marline).
  • Ona natural 20, they are able to catch a legendary fish (Blue Marline).
  • On a natural 1, they must repeat the Cast action next turn.
  Fish Rarity Chart:
    4. Reeling
  Reeling Roll:
  • The DM rolls for the weight of the fish using the fish-specific die.
  • The reeling DC is determined as 10 + the weight of the fish.
  • The player must make the appropriate check against the DC on the rarity chart to successfully reel in the fish.
  • On a fail the fish scatter and you will need to cast again next turn.
Special Tool Rules:
  • Net: Roll 1d4 to determine the number of fish. Each fish has its own DC by it’s weight. The player rolls one for all fish, but success or fail is determined for each fish independently.
  • Trap: You will not know if the fish has entered the trap unless you use a turn to perform a Perception check (DC 10 for quantity, DC 15 for estimated weight). A trap requires at least one turn to pull in and retrieve fish.
  • Fishing Pole: On a failed reeling check, the player can make a Constitution save against the same DC to keep the fish on the line for another try next round.
  • Spear: After three fish are on the spear you must spend a round to drop fish off.
  • Bare Hands: On Reel fail, can attempt to catch same fish with offhand (no prof bonus). After carrying three fish you must spend a round to drop fish off.
Natural 20s and 1s:
  • A natural 20 on a reeling check means the fish has eaten another fish of the same size. Double the weight of the catch. (DC stays the same)
  • A natural 1 means the fish is lost, if using a pole or net you will need to cast again next turn.
  5. Scoring
  Point Calculation:
  • Points = Rarity Multiplier × Weight of Fish.
  • Rarity Multipliers: Common = 1, Uncommon = 2, Rare = 3, Legendary = 5.
  Competition Duration:
  • The competition lasts for 10 rounds.
