Flipflop Casper
Player Character
Backstory:
Born into a secluded yet proud family, commonly known as the Flipflopers. This family gained moderate wealth having a small family business creating shoes. Casper has always sported a pair of these shoes in the small forest where he was raised while also watching his family work the flip flop business. The forest in which Casper was raised is known as the Crimson Pines where the trees are made of red wood and the leaves appear like fire on the branches. Casper often spent time above ground instead of working within the family business, he rather playing with the small animals and relaxing in the warm aura of the forest reading all manner of tomes and books that were stored in the burrows of his home. However, what work he did for the business was documentation which Casper became very skilled with a quill, ink and paper. Once a month a shipment of shoes that had been crafted by the family would be taken to the gnome trade city, Geddon. Quito, one of Caspers eighth removed third cousins normally accompanied the shipment however he would complain about his knees giving out on the journey. Casper was reluctantly convinced to travel outside of a home he had never left at the age of 32. Arriving at Geddon, Casper was more interested in purchasing new books on lore and history, perhaps even some of the gods this time. Only having a few hours in the city before journeying back to the Crimson Pines, he would complete his duties and find the library. However upon walking inside he found something he seemed to not know he was looking for. Before him was a beautiful gnome who stood slightly taller than Casper with feathered red hair that shaped around her defined features. Once his eyes locked with hers a bright candy red that reminded him of his home, he knew books were no longer his only desire in this city. Now Casper, much to his family's surprise, wished to accompany the shipment of flip flops every month to have a chance at seeing this woman again. After months he slowly made more and more contact with Yorinda, a scribe who lived here in Geddon and years passed as the two went from acquaintances to friends to lovers. Though his family disapproved, Casper soon decided to move away from the home he loved so much and all the books he had read a hundred times over. As it was now 3 years after first seeing her, he decided he never wished to be without her. Casper had tried his hand at working as a scribe yet he could not find himself following directions very well, not dissimilar to when he worked with his family. And so found work in more shady dealings and forgeries, sometimes helping out the needy or bringing the cruel to a humbling knee through his work, though more often benefiting himself. At his core Casper lives by his own code. A deal is a deal but the smart and quick are the ones that end up with the better end of the stick… most of the time. Having a few run-ins with the laws of Geddon and the very rare slip up on his ruses. Casper ended up being “the guy” to go to if you ever needed a helping hand in life for a fee. Yorinda never disapproved of Casper’s choices in lifestyle but did always warn him that one day consequences may follow him. Yet she loved him no less and maintained her work as a scribe in the library of Geddon. In years that followed the two were established as well known in the city and lived comfortably. Casper had relinquished the majority of his forgery work, trying to square up relying more on his enchanting personality, trading books and scrolls before the birth of his and Yorinda's child. The year 396 marked the birth of Astria with flaming orange hair and bright green eyes with flecks of amber. Now a family, life seemed to just be simple. With a few skewed deals of course. But before long the Darkness began to spread its dominance over the land. The world. As life began to get harder and trade for books and scrolls was swapped for that of shields and swords to protect oneself. Yorinda had suggested finding somewhere safer to live as a trade city was surely to be soon overrun. Casper and a young Astria traveled back to the Crimson Pines to talk to a family he had once left but never forgotten about. He found no one in the burrows he had discovered his curiosity for knowledge and life in. Nothing. Empty bar, one set of shoes and a note left in Quito’s handwriting. “Your knees may become frail and weak though your feet will always lead you to what you truly desire.” Donning the shoes, the pair set off to return to Yorinda in Geddon. What they returned to however was slaughter and rampage. Fire and brimstone had been released on the city and reduced it to smoldering ruins. The pair manage to get to their home looking for the last piece of their family to again find no one. However, a bookshelf slightly ajar revealed to Casper an alcove carved into the wall holding a pendant of an owl and a book. A tome of spells written in Yorinda’s handwriting. With more questions than answers the father and daughter gathered what they could and fled to find refuge. 4 years passed as the two bounced from city to city, town to town. Casper found no other choice than to start his less than honest dealings once more simply to get by. Donning a persona of a powerful gnomish noble from before the war with a secret stash of riches built from his family trade of clobbering and connections to other noble houses he has either heard or read about. Casper believed by doing this he was able to make life a bit easier than appearing to be just two refuges that had lost not only majority of what they owned but also a vital part of their family as well. Astria however did not approve of her father’s dishonesty and cunning to swindle his way through life. With now an obsession to learn about what it was his partner had seemingly left for him by her mother, little time was spent as the loving family Astria had always known. Before long Astria was fed up with this new way of living and after clutching at the owl pendant around her neck and shaming her father, that this isn’t what her mother wanted for them, she stormed off and simply did not return. Casper after a few days had passed thinking she would calm down and return like always began searching for his daughter. His beacon of light in a world being consumed by darkness. Feeling the guilt and weight of his actions he is now trying to find and put the pieces of his family back together. Hoping that even if his knees grow tired his feet will continue onwards to what he desires.
