He is immortal, but his existence is irrevocably tied to the seasons. Thus does he pass willingly into his own funeral pyre each Midwinter, only to be reborn into thunderous life on the first day of Spring. Each year, on the eve of the vernal equinox, the Wild Riders of the Asrai select a young prince who will bear the The Crown of Orion for the coming year. This chosen one is led to the Great Gaia of Orrin and given over to the archdruids' keeping.
Orion was a demi-god of the Asrai, a powerful shapeshifter and warrior, who fell during the Great War when the Darkness invaded the Deepwood Vale . Myth says that Bool killed Orion in one-on-one combat. Orion was beheaded, and his head was mounted on top of the Gaia Tree, for all of Zin to witness the failure and the end of the Age of Heroes.
Bool commanded the Urks to take the crown to Barovia, desecrated it, where it would be trapped forever in the forces of Darkness.
It is one of the great lost artifacts of Zin.
