Dwarf

Dwarves dwell in the high-elevation regions of Avasi, and have lived there for longer than humans. They have a long history of craft; many Avasian weapons are dwarf-built, and many dwarf warriors are also skilled in the use of weapons. Despite this, most dwarven kingdoms prefer to fight defensively, except when provoked, or if an enemy js too threatening to ignore. Though still placing an emphasis on the clan, dwarven cultures don't tend to be as traditional as in other worlds. However, such changes usually occur over generations, causing many younger races to view dwarves as slow to adapt. Additionally, dwarves have little interest in the jewels they mine, happily selling them off to other races in exchange for more practical goods. Most dwarf kingdoms are city-states in the vast World's Roof mountain range, but the largest dwarf-ruled realm is the theocracy of Audren in northeastern Avasi. Dwarves can also be found in the regions adjacent to Avasi, most notably Gukam and Vilush (also known as the Western Grasslands).   The grey dwarves, once ruled by mind flayers, live in the Underdark and sometimes on the surface of western Zaniq. The hill dwarves are literally named, and are most populous in Audren, while the mountain dwarves hail from the World’s Roof.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Compared to humans, dwarves are short and stout, rarely reaching 5 feet tall. Other than the pale grey-skinned dwarves of the Underdark, dwarves have skin tones in the same range as humans, and most are a similar color to Avasian humans. Their hair, worn long but in simple styles, is usually black, gray, or brown, though some mountain dwarves are red-haired. All adult dwarves have beards, regardless of gender, unless they shave. This is considered a shameful act in many dwarf cultures though, and is therefore rarely done.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Dwarves come from Avasi, and there are multiple dwarf city-states in the World's Roof Mountains. The dwarves of the hills still prefer the north of Avasi to the south, and are most common in the theocracy of Audren. Dwarven settlements can also be found in the Empire of Gukam in Zaniq.
