Help & Advice

Similar battles from history could be something like the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, where the Greeks were vastly outnumbered by the invading Persians, yet managed to hold an advantageous position and inflict huge casualties despite their eventual defeat. There could be some element of the battle that gives the smaller side a similar advantage, whether that be terrain, weather, weaponry, skill, or even magic if the setting is fantasy. Whatever it is, it should cost the larger side of the battle dearly, so that it makes their victory seem hollow. It might even have repercussions beyond the battle that are negative for the victors, from the obvious which is a loss of soldiers and morale, to something more subtle such as political strife and the quiet removal of military leadership.
