The near future is dark and full of dangers. Governments lost grip, corporations fell and rose more power hungry than ever and the streets belong to the gangs. Living is hard and expensive, lives on the other hand are cheep and expendable. What you gonna get, is only what you fight to earn and your only option to get away of this life is the "edge", where the line between law and chaos are vague at best.
Edge-runners are the adventurers of the dark future. Armed with whatever they can get their hands on, be it a vintage assault rifle or a barely updated cyberdeck - both capable to make your day - they fight on the "edge". Their line of work is risky, dirty and more times than often lethal, however it pays good edies, choomba. They are not the heroes in shinny armor nor noble souls fighting for justice. They are not trying to save the world, they just try to survive.
