Session 47: Be careful what you wish for Report
General Summary
After a brief discussion of when and how to clean all the extras out of the "purse", Cigfran mentioned that there were undead down the hall. The group considered what options they had, given that it was only mid afternoon, and the spellcasters were already quite exhausted magically. Cigfran also asked about possibly restoring his feet, but the healers in the party were unable to come up with any viable alternatives given the resources available. As they were talking, quite loudly at times, Cigfran pointed down the hall and said "If you don't want to fight undead, you might want to run" and the party saw a small horde of undying horrors begin rushing through a carelessly opened door into the wide corridor connecting to the room where the party was debating. Roy , reacting quickly, read a mystical "paper insects", conjuring a plague of tiny paper insects to tear at these undying creatures. Cigfran took careful aim and fired a crossbow bolt at one of the stronger creatures, tearing into its left shoulder, to which it responded with "Thou Shalt be Food!". Roisin Marshfield ordered Roy to attack, and both of his eldritch bolts of force struck, albeit only lightly, and Boris reacted by throwing his hammer in coordination; throwing his hammer into its chest. One of the stronger creatures strode forward and fired a longbow twice, but was then torn to shreds by the fierce paper insects. Jeeves walked up the nearest wall (thanks to his slippers of spider climbing), then fired two arrows at the remaining stronger creature, both of which struck it in the chest. The creature laughed "heeheehee, it tickles!", pulled the arrowws out and tossed them aside. A few more creatures tried to rush forward, but were torn apart by the paper insects. The remaining stronger creature rushed up next to Cigfran , but was unable to do more than that. Boris threw his hammer at the creature next to Cigfran , tearing through its chest, and blasting its head apart as it flew back toward Boris before reappearing in his hand with a rainbow flash. Boris also threw the hammer at a zombie, but it missed. More zombies tried to reach the group, but were torn apart by the insects. Roy moved up to clear his aim, fired blasts of eldritch energy, one of which hit a zombie, then moved back. Cigfran took careful aim, fired, and hit only due to his uncanny knack for accuracy, and tore through the horror. As Roisin Marshfield began to act, the space went quiet, except for the sound of more undying horrors approaching what Boris briefly called the "Insect wagon wash". As these creatures flooded into the space, Roisin Marshfield orderd Boris to attack, and that worthy threw a hammer and struck one of the icy horrors in front, disrupting its movement. Cigfran fired at the same creature, and knocked free a bit of ice. Roisin Marshfield also rallied her companions with a word of encouragement. Jeeves fired his bow at the same icy creature, knocking free more of the ice covering it. Jeeves then moved back; after he moved back the wraith previously hiding in the wall followed, and swung at Jeeves , draining his life force. A blood zombie rushed forward, ending next to Cigfran . The ice creature, unable to move lost many bits to the paper insects, then fired a longbow at Jeeves , but missed. Several skeletons rushed into the swarm of paper insects, only to be torn to bits. The other icy creature charged ahead and struck at Boris, attempting to leave a shard of itself in the wound, but failing. Boris called upon the power of The Source to abjure these undying abominations, and drove several to flee from his holy presence. A wraith apparated behind Roy , and stole his breath, leaving him unconscious and dying, then further drained his life, leaving him on the very edge of death, and moved to flank Jeeves . Cigfran took careful aim and shot one of the wraiths next to Jeeves , leaving it staggered and barely holding together. Roisin Marshfield consumed a potion that enabled her to switch places with Jeeves , then fell to the ground and moved away. Jeeves then moved to Roy and used his chiurgen's skill to bring the wizard back from the brink of death. Roy awoke to a finger in a wound that hurt terribly, but was much recovered. The wraith, angry that Roisin Marshfield spoiled their feast, flew over to Roisin Marshfield and caressed her face, draining a large portion of her life force. The blood zombie, forced to flee, rushed away, and the more damaged ice creature rushed away as well. The other ice creature swung at Boris, but missed. Boris then threw a hammer at the creature next to him, and hit, but missed with the follow-up attack. The other wraith moved to flank Boris, and reached into his chest, pulling away a good portion of his life force. Roy stood up, blasted the wraith attacking Roisin Marshfield, destroying it. Cigfran took aim at the wraith beside him, and fired his crossbow, tearing into it. Roisin Marshfield ordered Roy to attack, and he struck it with two blasts of eldritch energy. Boris, in coordination, struck the wraith critically at the same time. Jeeves fired at the blood zombie, hitting twice, then moved back. The blood zombie then rushed over to Jeeves , thirsting for blood. The ice creature attacked Boris, striking for a change, but again Boris resisted the infiltrating shard of ice. Boris struck the wraith, staggering it and also tearing away a bit of it's substance, then the follow-up strike destroyed the creature. Roy trapped the blood zombie in momentary stasis. Cigfran used the distraction of Boris behind it to strike the ice creature strongly. Roisin Marshfield ordered Boris to attack, and he struck the creature, causing it to fall prone. Jeeves ran over and shocked the ice creature, discovering that lightning heals it. The creature tried to hit Boris, but missed, and Boris struck the creature with Might of Borelius, and the follow-up strike. Roy struck the blood zombie with two blasts of eldritch energy, and Cigfran took aim at the icy creature next to him, causing it to explode in a shower of shards, some of which lodged in each of the three individuals around it. Roisin Marshfield ordered Boris to attack, and that worthy critically struck the blood zombie which exploded in a shower of blood, which struck Jeeves , draining away a large portion of his life force from the innate necrotic energy in that creature.
The undying destroyed, Jeeves removed the digging shards of ice from his flesh. Boris also tried to remove the shards, but only ended up driving them deeper in, and they dug themselves even further in. Jeeves then helped out Boris, and a moment later helped Cigfran .
As the group paused to gather themselves, a suit of armor tore open a side door and charged into the room, bashing Cigfran with a mailed fist. Cigfran backed up, them aimed and fired a bolt that tore through the armor; leaving it nothing but a pile of armor on the ground. As the icy unliving horror (which had run away earlier) now rushed into the room behind the armor, Roisin Marshfield ordered Cigfran to attack, and he struck a good hit. Boris threw his hammer in coordination, striking as well. Jeeves fired two arrows, which blew the ice creature apart, fortunately nobody was close enough to be harmed in the explosion.
The final remnants of their attackers cleared up, Jeeves took time to patch up everyone's wounds. Roy conjured the wonderous watcher ward, and just lay down where he was as the group gathered around. While they relaxed in the dome, Roy spent some time reading object auras and identifying magical objects, discovering things about this place in its heyday, and also terrrible dark secrets of its demise. In the process Roy experienced some unfortunate side effects, and the last item read left him unconscious. The group passed a night quietly, and without incident, until they woke in the morning.
When they woke Roy was starting to suffer strange effects like skin turning green, and Jeeves determined that this was a terrible disease called Gorse Rot; which Boris quickly cured. Roy again began reading object auras, and again he fell unconscious from the side effects after encountering a terrible hag in the conjured vision. After Roy awoke, Cigfran noticed an iron nail in Roy 's neck, and this led to a sequence of events wherein the party had to fight Roy . Cigfran fired a bolt, but missed, Roisin Marshfield ordered Cigfran to fire again, but he missed again. Roy conjured a gravity sinkhole, which damaged most of the group. Boris managed to hit with his hammer, and Roy held up his hands and yelled stop. Cigfran , not trusting this, fired a bolt and the poison exhausted Roy slightly. Roy rushed over to Boris, knelt in front of him, and Boris tore the nail from his neck. Tearing out the nail was probably not the best choice, as Roy nearly died from the injury caused, but Roisin Marshfield's cry kept him conscious. Boris threw the nail down, after realizing it was a four-inch long iron fingernail, and burned it with holy fire. A moment later a night hag shimmered into existence next to Roy and Boris.
