Session 84: Time for an Intervention Report

General Summary

Just before the other two combat constructs acted, Roy saw his friends fade out for a moment, and the aging wizard briefly wondered if this would be his final end, but the others suddenly reappeared stronger and better prepared than he remembered them. A voice came to the ones who had been affected. "Take a moment, get your bearings, you can't move just yet, but you're back where you were and I appreciate the assistance; hopefully that bit of rest you had will help.". Suddenly, the roar and violence of battle returned as the Combat Construct (a Flamberge) moved up in front of Roy, a port opened in its chest, and a jet of flame blasted into both Roy and Jeeves. The next Flamberge launched itself over the gap in the mountainside with the flaming jets from its boots. As the creature passed over Boris he threw his hammer, but missed, and the creature fired a crossbow at Roy as it tore through his shoulder, leaving him staggered. Roisin ordered Roy to attack, so Roy fired an eldritch blast at the spider construct, striking once as Jeeves reacted by firing a longbow, but the arrow disappeared as strange plants sprouted all around and a glowing berry appeared on the tree next to him. Roy used a short range teleport to get away from his attackers, then fired two more eldritch blasts at the spider construct, hitting once. Roy's animate objects all swarmed the spider creature heavily battering it. Another Flamberge stepped up to Jeeves and kicked him in the head before jumping down next to him. The Spider creature rushed over to Roisin, struck her with a paralyzing beam, which Roisin resisted, then struck her with both forelegs. Jeeves ate the glowing berry, feeling strengthened and refreshed, slapped the Flamberge with a shocking grasp, then ran away from it and drank a Hearutha's Health using mystical union to cause it to heal Roy, a faint flow of healing energy connecting the two. Boris quickly consumed a magical herb, used his magic cape to teleport near his friends, then, with support from divine boons, called forth a massive host of spirit guardians in the form of glowing celestial gavels that battered the three Flamberge severely, and further battered the spider-like construct before Boris moved up close to one of the Flamberge. The Flamberge slammed Boris, but his armor deflected the blows. The next Flamberge ran up toward Boris, a port in its chest opened, and a gout of flame engulfed the halfling and the Spider construct as well. Roisin directed Boris to heal the party, so Boris called forth a field of mass healing that strengthened everyone and slightly closed wounds. Roy yelled out a quick apology to Boris, then conjured a sphere of crushing gravitational force that engulfed all of the constructs as well as Boris. Boris managed to completely resist the magic, but was still hit as the construct he was fighting tumbled past him. The Spider construct was pulled to the center, slamming into the Flamberge; one Flamberge resisted, and the last Flamberge slammed into the pile up in the center, exploding in a double fireball that would have nearly killed Boris, except for a divine boon from Jeeves. Roy's animated spikes swarmed the Spider construct again, covering it with dents. The last Flamberge moved into position to fire a blast of flame at both Jeeves and Roy, then slammed Jeeves, and exploded from overload. The Spider construct looked around, was torn to bits by Boris' spirit gavels, and the parts shimmered and disappeared.

The adventurers discussed where these creatures might have come from, and Roy mentioned that this type of creature was probably hired by Roisin's father to hunt her down and return her to him.

Jeeves took the lead walking through the mountains, and they walked for the remainder of the day toward the Pits of Borelius. As the sun set, they found a place to set up a camp, a shallow cave or large niche. Jeeves used Healer's Sight to scan the area, but saw nothing of note except air elementals cavorting on the winds far above. Roy looked around at the space Jeeves found, then, after asking Roisin how well hidden she wanted to be, conjured a Hidden Lodge that just looked like a rock outcropping where the cave had been. Roy led the group inside through the very well concealed door, and Boris conjured a faithful hound to guard the door, then magically healed the worst of Roy's injuries that had been neglected earlier in the day. Roy ate a meal and climbed upstairs to get some sleep, but the others found they were not particularly tired. Jeeves also found he would need no food or water for some days, thanks to the strange glowing berry. Jeeves spent the night working on his Jasper Puzzle Box, and had some success. In the morning, Jeeves suggested using a divine boon to summon a magical flaming chariot for 12 hours to enable them to travel quickly through the mountains at a bit above the ground, so they could move faster through the rough terrain.

Boris chose to pray for divine intervention to hide them from their enemies and be masked from detection. Even as he prayed, there was a knock on the door. Boris opened the door to see an old man standing there. "Oh, hello, Boris. A good friend told me you needed some help. Is that true?" "We are, Sir." "Something about needing to hide from your enemies." "Yes, they are very persistent." The old man pulled out a bag from his pocket. "I have here a bag of magic beans. If you eat one you will be hidden for a very long time. What would you give for such wonders?" "Perhaps this magic dust and powerful gel?" "That is most generous for an old man." The old man pocketed the items, then handed the bag to Boris. "Be well, Sir Boris, and know that your faithful service is recognized." As the man turned to walk away, he suddenly expanded to 24 feet tall, with massive wings, bronze skin, a massive glowing sword, and an immense longbow, before taking flight and fading into the distance. Boris, in shock, realized he had been visited by a greater angel, and spent some time trying to think of what named angel this might have been as he felt rejuvenated and incredibly giddy. Roisin asked what was in the bag, and Boris told her, excitedly, that he had traded powerful weapon enhancer and magic dust for a bag of magic beans. Roy, very skeptical, ordered Boris to eat a bean, whereupon Boris simply disappeared. Jeeves activated his Healer's Sight, but could see nothing. As everyone looked around for Boris, Jeeves heard clinking armor and a brief giggle. Boris said "This is the ticket, guys. I don't know how long it lasts, but this will keep us hidden on our journey." Roy held out a hand, closed his eyes, and said "OK, Boris, I can't see you, so just give me a bean." Boris handed him a bean and he said "Oh, great... Here goes nothing" and ate the bean, disappearing instantly. Roisin, then Jeeves, followed suit, and quickly realized they were only hearing each other through their magic earrings, and were not making sound. They all stepped outside, then Jeeves summoned the blazing chariot, which was also invisible. They all climbed aboard, and flew through the next couple hours to the valley at the edge of the Pits of Borelius. They noticed the fate of flying creatures as they flew; air creatures tore to bits anything that entered their domain above the mountains, and Roy explained, via their magic earrings, that the "Lords of the Air" claimed all air above the Korth Wall, and no means of magical flight was tolerated in their domain. Their very undetectability was all that protected them. They dropped very low to the ground at this, and approached the shimmer that engulfed the massive ten mile wide region of mountains riddled with caves, pits, sheer cliffs, and sinkholes known as "The Pits of Borelius". As they reached the shimmer, their chariot suddenly turned into a swarm of butterflies and they dropped a few feet to the ground. Stopping here for a moment, the group considered what to do next as they recalled the descriptions of the Pits; a place where the weave of magic was shattered, and anything could happen.
