Session 40 - Through the Warfields Report

General Summary

Evening of the 72nd Moonshine   The group approach the warzone, Cel and Geoffrey left behind. Panser uses Sending to check up on them - they seem okay, and have enough rations to survive outside the city of Atama.    They reach the warfield, and immediately after entering the trenches, they begin discussing plans on how to cross the warfield safely. Elxis climbs up one of the sniper towers to scout out the battlefield. It's highly misty and foggy, so she can only see around halfway, but it's enough for her to draw a simple map.   Volleys of arrows and spells periodically surge across the battlefield. There are a few dead bodies strewn around the trenches.   Elxis grabs a machete from the Bag of Holding and passes it to Aarkatus, so he can defend himself. The group notices as a small party of goblins drag an old siege catapult through the mud and up to the trenches - XIV helps drag it, and Elxis helps repair the faulty mechanism. They discuss the possibility of launching Elxis across the battlefield, but eventually decide against it.   The group hear an orc prisoner being dragged over to the camp, after he was caught in a trap. They approach him, XIV creating a zone of truth to interrogate him. Just as they begin interrogating, one goblin prison guard approaches with a shard of Arcanite, jabbing it into the orc to test for magic. The shard gleams, proving the orc has magic and is therefore dangerous, so he slays the orc.   Dismayed, the group go to the goblin prisoner to find another orc to interrogate. They find one, who they learn is named Ekora, and take him to the zone of truth. XIV and Panser interrogate him - he draws a crude map of the orc side of the battlefield.   After they get the information they need, they head back to the trenches, leaving Ekora to the goblin captors. Not long later, the captors drag Ekora to the trenches, having horrifically mutilated him to entertain the goblin soldiers in the trenches.   After that, Panser creates his magical hut. The group sleep inside, as well as a few goblins, including one called Ihanga who speaks common. Ihanga gives Elxis a votive figure of the goblin luck god, Angitu.   73rd Moonshine   The group awakens, after a short sleep in Panser's tiny hut. They meet a goblin commander, who rides a wolf, alongside a group of wolfrider cavalry. They brief the commander on the plan to come, and the commander begins rallying the goblin soldiers to prepare for a charge.   Panser casts tongues on XIV so he can speak orcish, and XIV disguises as an orc using Elxis' necklace of disguise. Elxis and Akio do the same with the disguise self spell. At that moment, they charge from the trenches. Panser goes invisible. As instructed, a group of goblins set off to chase the group.   They charge at the large orc foxhole at the front of the orc's side - the orcs fire at them momentarily, but realise them to be allies (or so they think). Panser uses sending to get the full goblin army to charge. The group pass the foxhole, Elxis setting her faerie dragon to cast alight the steps out of the foxhole. With no escape, the orcs in the foxhole are cut down by the charging wolfrider cavalry.   Akio throws the wild seeds he found in a wild magic zone at a different group of orcs, who are behind a fortified wall. Panser casts plant growth on the seeds, which burst into massive plants, which rip apart the group of orcs, killing a few and wounding many.   Akio and Elxis then cast fire bolt, lighting the orc stockpile aflame. The battle rages on, as the goblins arrive, fighting the surprised and cut-down orcs. The group flees the battlefield after assisting the goblins for a moment.   They spot orc reinforcements - warg riders - rapidly approaching. They manage to slip away, into the forests, breaking off from the warfields and finally escaping. The group recuperates eventually.    74th Moonshine   It's now late morning. The begin travelling through the valley to make their way to Eutrakha, where they must pass a valley keep. Just as they begin travelling against the edge of the valley, they run into an orc marauding party, two orc scouts with a war pig, which is being ridden by a goblin caster.   Panser breaks the wooden bridge between them, and XIV uses his hammer to kill the two scouts with ease. Elxis casts create bonfire through her dragon behind the pig, which scares it, and uses euphoria breath to confuse the caster. The caster jumps off the cliff in his confusion, probably to his death, while the terrified war pig runs away, squealing, back towards the valley keep.   The group cross the gap where the bridge once was, and Panser creates his magic hut for them and they sleep. Just as the group are about to sleep, Elxis sends off her dragon to the valley keep ahead, commanding it to use fire bolt and cause fires.   It flies around, igniting homes and killing a few orcs, as well as a goblin prisoner. After a few minutes of slaughter, it turns around to face a orc figure clad in black armour, which throws a magical fireball and nearly destroys the dragon. Wounded, it flies back to Elxis, who witnessed the slaughter through the dragon's eyes.   While the group sleeps, XIV uses his sentry watch. Elxis goes to sleep, perturbed by what she had done.
