Special Agent James Derringer, known as Agent White to his team, answers one of his many untraceable burner phones. This is the one he hopes never rings, there is only one of his clandestine contacts that uses this number. It's bad news, in my line of work it's never any good news. During my long tenure with the FBI, I have seen and been responsible for my share of failed ops and injuries and even deaths of fellow agents under my direct command. This would have been my last assignment with Delta Green before my 57th birthday and my mandatory retirement with the FBI, before transitioning onto the public sector in my twilight years. “Fuck” it's even worse than previously imagined, I sighs as I destroys the burner phone. Looks like a long-buried skeleton has resurfaced, why am I not surprised! It's like those movie tropes I am only X days away from retirement. And I am getting too old for this, there is a reason why you never retire from my line of work. I smile to myself thinking back to last month when my fellow FBI Agent and Delta Green Agent said he was joining the YOLO Sheriff's department early next year. We joked about me taking the 9mm retirement plan... Save the career and my legacy or help the team? Not much of a choice is there, Celer, Silens, Mortalis i whisper to myself as I get into my rental car and set the GPS to Yuma Sheriff's department. A few precious hours later, every minute counts. But I needed to clear out my burn box and make sure there were no traces that lead back to Delta Green. As I walk into the Sheriff's department in downtown Yuma, and flashes my badge to the duty officer and demand to see the Special Agents assigned to the “Ritual Killings” I get whisked into a briefing room with the lead detective, Senior Detective Julia Reardon and three Special Agents; David Lee, Marcus Johnson and Emily Rodriguez. I try and muster up my best adhortative facade and my words come out more like an order than a request when I tell them something terrible is happening right now in Mustang. The Sheriff asks where this information came from, I hide behind the confidential informants bullshit. Senior Detective Reardon counters that they have had some disturbance there and have sent the closest patrol to investigate. I recognize the patrol officers tasked with keeping the crime scene secure at the 771 East County 10th Street. She ends with but we haven't heard back so there is probably nothing to be worried about. “Fucking amateur” I almost blurt out as I try to keep my cool, she doesn't know what she is dealing with. I prayed that it wouldn't come to this. “Fuck!” As soon as I mention that this have Operation: Puzzlebox clearance the other special agents react how I would have hoped. As a united force, we convince the Sheriff to let us access the Yuma Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team (SRT) equipment and have a team standing by in case we need backup. During the car ride out to Mustang I explained that this is just some bureaucratic blunder that they dispatched two teams to investigate the same case. They seemed to believe me, and I didn't give them time to contact their handler and verify me. It's late afternoon when we arrive at the outskirts of Mustang, something is off about the situation. There is an accident up ahead with a semi blocking both lines of traffic, we haven't heard about any such blockade on the police scanner. There is also a Sheriffs cruiser on site, not the normal highway patrol, my gut tells me to be ready for anything. As we slow down at the police barrier one officer steps out from the police cruiser. I noticed the stained and ill-fitting uniform that along with other unidentified people hiding behind the semi and other vehicles in the area. When our car comes to a complete stop, the officer approaches the driver's side window. “Remain calm and let us get out of here” I whisper to the others. The “officer” or the person impersonating him, there is no doubt now. The ill-fitting uniform, the stains that look and smell like blood and sweat. He tells us that we can't get past and need to turn around. The driver, Special Agent Rodriguez asks him if it's a 10-100 and the officer nods and moves out of the way for us to turn around. As the car turns around, we all look at each other 10-100 is code for a bathroom break, something is going on for sure.
Cleaning up after the fact and what was the original purpose of the Navy Annex?
Things are starting to get interesting in the desert. One thing about the killings, they are not random. What does the numbers mean? “I knew not which to believe, yet longed more and more to cross forever into the unknown land; for doubt and secrecy are the lure of lures, and no new horror can be more terrible than the daily torture of the commonplace.”
