Session 42: the prison Report

General Summary

Hedrack had vanished, the assassins defeated, and the elementals banished to their planes. Now the adventurers sat and wondered what to do. After some discussion they retreated to the vampire chamber for a long rest, but they also took time to investigate Hedrack's chamber and despoil it with holy water. The heroes noted that someone had been in the room.
At the end of their rest, Orlac used Scrying and his purloined hairs from Hedrack's cloak to spy upon the priest. Hedrack was in a tower (likely the Inner Fane) and speaking with The First, a leader of the cult of Tharizdun. Hedrack spoke of the interlopers (our heroes) and their assault upon the Outer Fane. The First, a scarred man in robes, spoke disparagingly to Hedrack, belittling him for his failure, even slapping him across the face and sending blood to the wall. The heroes learned that the Triad, the leaders of the cult of Tharizdun with The First at their head, were excavating the lower levels of the The Temple of Elemental Evil with dark plans to return the dread god Tharizdun to the Material Plane (and additional idle talk now made more sense after our heroes returned to Hedrack's Journal). The First commanded Hedrack to deal with the intruders and see to their demise. It seems that this conversation took place within the tower at the centre of the Inner Fane.
After this, the heroes made their way back to the "sitting room" and nearby chambers. In the southern chamber they found a personal room of sorts with chests, a wardrobe, free-standing mirror and central pit with pillows and blankets. A spectre emerged from the mirror and was quickly dispatched. The chests were protected by a glyph of freezing, but dispel magic cast by party members nullified these traps. The chests contained personal feminine items, two vials of alchemists' fire, two potions (of yet unknown properties) and magical boots, seemingly adding to the speed of the wearer.
Across the hall, and just beyond the sitting room, the party found a room with a numbered dial and lever. This was the entrance to some sort of extra-dimensional prison and after some experimentation the party began calling forth prisoners to the circles inscribed in silver upon the floor: Athemal, a halfling commoner taken from the Greypeak mountains has stayed with the party as he knowns not what to do; an Azer, firey creature from that plane who had investigated the fire temple, but was glad to be set free; a Lamia, evil sphinx creature who ran at her first opportunity, Vister, an elf paladin who has joined the party in their assault against the Temple; and a Troll, quickly dispatched by Barbados and his companions.
With new companions joined, the party moved west down the corridor an into a large octagonal room with a ceiling 80 feet over head. Orlac's vision allowed him to see to the room's roof where he spied ledges and avian nests of some sort. Strange hawk like creatures arose from the ledges and dove towards our heroes...
