Session 2 / Ruined Manor Part 2 Report

General Summary

Session started with three adventurers, Haaða, Ðupyaf, and Diira, facing down a party of rats in Vaelrin's Kitchen. In the previous session, Haaða had befriended one of the rats by complementing his hat.

Session started with Ðupyaf's player delivering the prologue. Yum-yum's player was not present for the session.

The Feast

The party decided to cook a meal to endear themselves further to the rat tribe. Ðupyaf cooked a stew using potatoes and Oat Corn meal. Diira searched the room for materials to make a battery Gadget. Just as the rats were starting to settle down, a ghoulish howl interrupted the feast.

The Laundry

The rats all fled into various crawl spaces. One rat beckoned the players over to the western wall of the kitchen, which contained a crawl space big enough for humans. The Haaða and Ðupyaf had difficulty getting through the gap and became irritated.

None of the party had Dungeoneer, so Ðupyaf, having the highest Health, pulled the party through. Getting a party through a tight squeeze was too much of a challenge even with Haaða's help, so both gained the Angry condition.

The party found an old laundry on the other side of the crawl space. Haaða lit a torch. It contained old wash tubs and related junk, and the walls were covered with waist-high grafitti. The grafitti depicted rats fighting wolf-spiders and a humanoid creature. There were also non-pictoral symbols in the grafitti.

Haaða recorded some of the rat symbols to interpret later. The group decided that the humanoid figure was probably the source of the howling, and Haaða and Diira brainstormed to figure out the identity of the creature. They recalled hearing of a hag, an undead magician that lurks on the edge of civilization. The party was frightened to realize they were dealing with a hag.

Investigating the room, the party found a flight of stairs, and went up to another room.

Recording the rat symbols was a Good Idea and did not require a roll. Players described where in their backstories they may have heard of a rare, magical creature, and Haaða's player rolled for Hunter, with Help from Diira's Lore Master skill. Players failed the roll and gained the Afraid condition.

The Library

The party found a library or study room full of ancient books, with a shrine in the far corner and a heavy, locked door in one wall. Diira searched through the books for valuables and found a book on golems. Diira folded up the book into a hat for ease of transport, and Ðupyaf donned the hat.

Players wanted to verify, based on a player-created map, that the locked door led back to the dining room from the first session. They then decided to pick the lock.

The Dining Room

The party decided to pick the lock of the heavy door using Diira's Multitudinous Tool gadget, and found their way back into Vaelrin's Dining Room. They retrieved the lantern oil.

Ðupyaf investigated the bodies of the Kingsmen for further information. He determined that they died of wolf-spider injuries, but were dressed in old-fashioned clothes after death. The players again investigated the Tapestry previously found in the room and found that it depicted people seating around a table in a similar manner to the Kingsmen, and that it was a wedding gift.

Diira attempted to also pick the lock on the door at the other end of the dining room, but made a loud noise and attracted the wolf spiders. The party fled back into the library, then back into the laundry room, where they re-discovered a rat friend they had met previosly (Haaða dubbed him Mr. Rat). As the party was deliberating on how to proceed, Mr. Rat stood suddenly and walked as if mesmerized through the crawl space into the kitchen.

Vaelrin

Diira decided to sneak through the crawl space and look into the kitchen. He saw a woman with yellow eyes and rotting flesh eating a meal with the rats, the meal that Ðupyaf cooked earlier. The rats ate as if mesmerized. Haaða decided to approach the hag and attempt to befriend her.

Ðupyaf decided to approach the hag (Vaelrin) by asking her how the meal was. Vaelrin responded positively - so positively she tried to hug Ðupyaf with her claws. He dodged out of the way in time. Diira, from his position still near the crawl space, attempted to shoot a flaming arrow near Vaelrin, causing her to flee.

The Garden

The party followed Vaelrin to the garden, but there was no sign of her in the courtyard. Ðupyaf decided to pick more trumpet vines to add to his Alchemy supplies, and became trapped by the vines...
