Conrad is never seen without his red leather coat. In fact Conrad isn't seen in things that can possibly show any skin. His read coat is honestly his most prized possession since it was given to him by the head alchemist of the apothecary he was assigned to work in.

Personal history

One would think that being born in a town in the Kingdom of Laelon would mean your family is as weary of magic as the rest of Laelon, but sadly that isn't the case. My parents had set up home in Jeibury, as it was small town close to the border of Laelon and the Nisiar Desert and they thought it was a perfect place to practice their magic in secrecy while also benefiting from the fertile land of Laeon. In a way, I suppose they were right since we were able to live there without anyone catching on that we had magic until I was twelve summers of age.
 
According to my father, he and my mother had lived in Jeibury for three years before I was born, and had assumed that I would pick up magic and be able to hide myself just like they did. However, he and my mother didn't account for one thing, just because they were blessed with an aptitude for magic, didn't mean that I did. As soon as I was deemed old enough to learn, my parents tried very hard to coax out my magic potential. Whenever it was deemed safe enough either my mother or my father, they would try to teach me any spell they possible could, just to see a spark of magic within me. As a child though, it seemed rather hopeless, because no matter how hard I tried a single spark of lightning, fire or frost appeared from my fingertips. I had no potential. This seemed to frustrate my parents, even if it would have been safer for me not to know magic at such a young age, and soon they did everything they could to try and fix my "unwillingness to learn".
 
Everyday after chores were done, or I came in from playing, I was to sit down and "practice" until dinner or until bed time. Everyday was met with failure and disappointment from my parents. With each failure, my parents gradually became a bit more reckless with their secret magic. It's a miracle that we even evaded as many witch hunts as we did. But sure enough, our luck had run out.
 
One day, Father had gotten very frustrated that I couldn't produce a simple firebolt and cast it himself to show me how it was done. The only problem was, we hadn't taken our usual precautions of closing the window curtains and making sure no one was around. Someone had seen and at the time we didn't know, and we wouldn't know until the next witch hunt.
 
We never participated or watched any of the witch hunts, but we knew when they would happen. Our neighbors would invite us to join in every morning of one, Mother would decline claiming I was too young to watch such things and be scoffed at for being too soft. We didn't even make it to the morning of that routine. The town had decided to start the witch hunt in the early morning hours and set our house a light.
 
The heat, the acrid smoke, the roars. I need to get out of here. I can't breathe. It burns. It burns. It burns! It Burns! IT BURNS!
 
I don't remember much of that night, and the next I came to, my parents had wrapped me up in bandages and were camped out in the middle of the desert. I was given a quick summary of what had happened and why I was worse off than my mother and father. My father, the only one of them to know any healing, had used it on himself (to make sure he'd live to heal another) and on my mother, who was apparently expecting, and I was young enough that'd I'd bounce back just right. It was fine, my mother needed it more than I did since she now held a baby. Obviously, as we had been the target of the hunt, and barely survived, my parents had decided we should make our way to Nisiar, as it was a haven for magic.
 
Once we had reached Nisiar, my parents quickly enrolled themselves in the academy to prove their worth, and had me try to apply there as well. However, I failed it as I was still healing and had no talent for magic. Just like that I was shunted off to "work my keep" in an apothecary.
 
The lead alchemist in the apothecary, sped up my healing with potions and balms and sent me to work in the gardens. It was fine, and it was at least work I knew how to do. Whenever I was bringing in the herbs and parts needed, I would ask the Alchemists what they were needed for and what they did. Some humored me, some just grunted at me to get back to work, most however would ignore me. Which worked fine, for when I had no task to do, I would hid myself in a corner of the Apothecary and pour over the tomes to figure out what each plant did and what it created. One day the lead alchemist happened upon me, took the book and handed me an herbalists kit and told me to make a basic sageroot brew without the recipe. It was an easy task to accomplish. He studied the potion for a bit before throwing me at one of the other alchemists with a bark of "teach him".
 
From then on, most of my days were spent learning what potion does what a long side any chores that were thrown at me by the other alchemists there. Even though I was learning a decent trade my parents still cared more for magic and now my younger brother who has shown a lot more potential than I did. It's fine though, as since now everyone is busy, I really don't have to see their disappointment in my magical failures. It's fine. It continued on like this for a few years, until our shop had some visitors from the Klif Company browsing our stock. I very much did not care who they were, I just wanted to do my job and learn, but the red haired man among the group would pester me with questions on what I was doing. Usually the lead alchemist would engage the customer so work could be done, but this time he told me to explain my methods and what I was making. I thought it was some sort of test, so I did as told and paid the red haired man no mind. It was a test, but not a test I was expecting. It turned out that the man asking the questions was the Helm Kasvaar. Somehow I had caught his attention, and he had decided from this little interaction that I was a perfect new recruit. I'm not, but if I didn't take up that offer to join the Klif Company I would be a fool. There's no future for me here besides apothecary work, and even then I'd be drowning in competition. So I took it, and here we are now.
