Vanvali
These creatures, once native from the Elemental Plane of Air, have found their way to some mountains in Toril. They spent centuries in these mountains and eventually a half-aarakocra half-airgenasi humanoid was created. These bloodlines became closely connected, creating winged humanoids with a strong connection to the air. They are a mostly peaceful folk, keeping to themselves. As they continued spreading through these mountains, they were eventually named after hem, The Vane Mountains.
Different Vanvala (singular form) have inherited different bird-like features depending on their ancestry, they are however all born with wings. Through evolution and developing settlements however, the Vanvali have become relatively rare. These days, if a fully fledged Vanvala is born, they are trained to protect their lands and usually become clerics or paladins.
Some Vanvali are born with different traits, some with only one and some with more, such as the following:
Even though Vanvali are connected to the air, through years of breeding with other races not all are as well equipped to fly. The main reason behind this was as centuries went by, the areas they lived in went deeper into the mountains as they carved out more and more room for housing. It's still clearly intended for flying passage, but it is doable with a lower flying speed.
Just as Aarakocra, Vanvali enjoy peace and solitude. Most of them have little interest in dealing with other people and less interest in spending time on the ground. For this reason, it takes an exceptional circumstance for a Vanvali to leave his or her tribe and undertake the adventurer’s life. Neither treasure nor glory is enough to lure them from their tribes; a dire threat to their people, a mission of vengeance, or a catastrophe typically lies at the heart of the Vanvala adventurer’s chosen path.
Petro's House of Fledglings
This establishment is the only orphanage in the Vane Mountains and is currently run by two sisters Gref and Daccea Petro. Gref is a couple years older and takes care of all administrational tasks whereas her younger sister Daccea takes care of flight training and work around the estate. The estate was originally run by their father, Dullash, but due to his passing away his children took over.
Both are always occupied with running the orphanage, but no two people could run such a large place on their own. This is why everyone at the orphanage has their own tasks and jobs to do around the building itself or to help the community. Inside of the main building where the administration takes place, there is a questboard with tasks from people in the Vane Mountains ranked by difficulty and danger. The Fledglings, inhabitants of the orphanage, can improve their skill and strength in order to take on higher-end quests. Younger Fledglings will typically do small fetch-quests such as gathering some apples or find a lost cat. Their earnings go to the orphanage and the Fledglings get a fair share themselves which they can spend on whatever they want.
Phillius is currently 29 and ever since a young age, ravens have always been interested in him. Even though no one really knew why, this didn't stop the people from the Vane Mountains to hire him as a living scarecrow as he seemingly had quite the talent for luring any type of corvid away from the farms.
The Property
Petro's House of Fledglings is located on the top of the Vane Mountains as it peers over the edge to some of the lower levels. There is only one entrance you can enter on foot, other than that you can easily approach the area by flying in from any side.
The property exists of multiple levels each dedicated to a different function:
Lower levels: This area which technically isn't part of the building itself yet, is dedicated to farmland and training-locations. The grassy field runs down to the city part of the Vane Mountains and is the only entrance by foot. Through the middle of this field runs a river that transforms into a waterfall as it goes down the mountain. On the right side next to the main building is a farm-house which includes the inventory of the orphanage.
Administration: If you go up the first flight of stairs there is a room dedicated for all the paperwork and administration. This area is run by Gref and anyone that seeks business or wants to put out a request for the questboard has to go in here, the same goes for visitors.
Sleeping quarters: This area is restricted only for the Fledglings and has to be accessed by flight or by the stairs from inside the administration-room. Even though some Fledglings share rooms, the goal is to avoid this when possible. The Fledglings are in charge of their own rooms, this includes cleaning it and decorating it the way they want to. Gref and Daccea sleep in two separate rooms behind the administration.
The upper-floor aka The Bird's Nest: This is the largest area of the building and serves for a general room for the Fledglings to hang out in, there is a separate room with a kitchen with a large table in it for dinner. The general room also includes a questboard for the Fledglings which is organised into different levels of difficulty that only certain Fledglings may take on.
Appearance
Body Features
Phillius is a Vanvala, meaning he is the descendant of a humanoid mixture between an air genasi and aarakocra. Even though not all Vanvali have the same features, Phillius does have quite the few features. For instance, his eyes are a piercing blue shade and are incredibly perceptive for looking into the distance. Up close however, he needs glasses.
Other than that, the one thing that stands out about Phillius are his gargantuan raven-black wings. Even though all Vanvali have wings, they rarely grow to be as long as his. The inside of his wings have white diamond-shaped feathers to truly make his wings unique. When the light shines on his wings, depending on the time of day and the form of light, his wings can give off a blue or green hue.
His armour exists of a leather chest plate specifically designed for his wings to move through which can be removed with a belt on his back. Over that, he wears typical Vanvali clothing which is lightweight and protective of the climate.
Mentality
Personal history
Orphaned at age 2, Phillius has no memories of his parents or any other direct family. Instead, he was raised in Petro's House of Fledglings, an orphanage in the Vane Mountains for Vanvali children. From a young age, ravens for some reason always seemed to be interested in him. It was speculated that this was because of his black wings, yet no real reason was connected to it in the beginning.
As a Fledgling, he worked a lot on farm to keep the corvids away from the vegetables and he also helped out the younger Fledglings with flight training.
When Phillius grew older he started having dreams about someone he referred to as ''The Masked Lady''. In those dreams, this lady showed up with a cloak with a raven on the back of it. Eventually, that raven started flying away and all that Phillius could and wanted to do was following this raven. Since then, every dream he had included at least one raven.
Because he shared his livingspace with other Fledglings, he was always considered as their big brother. Some Vanvali children from the orphanage get adopted, but Phillius was never interested in that. Instead he worked more on the property and farms around the Vane Mountains. There was one other Vanvala from around his age, Rakah.
Rakah
Ever since she was young, she was a strong-headed Vanvala, never saying no to a challenge. She is one of the strongest Vanvala combatants and is even to this day a strong match for Phillius. Her mother died during childbirth and her father is a drunk that was thrown in jail for destruction of property and violence. After living on the street for about a year, at 16 Rakah was eventually taken in by Gref to help Daccea with flight training, since she definitely out-skilled Phillius in that field. Her outstanding expertise in flying and flight-combat earned her the nickname ''The Hawk of Petro''.
After she became an adult she decided to stay at the orphanage in order to take care of possible unwanted visitors. Even though the Vane Mountains aren't necessarily dangerous, she couldn't bare thinking about something horrible happening to any of the Fledglings.
She always makes sure to check out newcomers to make sure that they aren't trouble. She tends to do this first with her hawk Louise. Even though the Vane Mountains don't get many visitors, the once that do visit are sure to meet Rakah at least once.
Rakah and Philius are close friends. Having gone through thick and thin, they are as close as siblings. Rakah, being the better fighter and flyer never stops to rub this in.
Guarc Dena and the Dena family
Guarc Dena is the daughter of Burrivil and Mearome Dena, the royal family of The Vane Mountains. The Dena family has always had a close relationship with Kindra and live in a peaceful harmony together. Because of their elemental heritage, they strictly follow the goddess Akadi, The Queen of Air. The entire Dena family doesn't have standard wings, but they have spectral ones based on their personality which they can summon and put away at will.
Guarc's grandmother, Phandra Dena, the mother of Burrivil Dena, is worried about their heritage due to Guarc being an only child and her lack of pursuing the search of a romantic partner. Secretly, Guarc and Phillius have been dating for years, never being able to officiate the relationship due to her family's superstition of Phillius' connection to the Ravenqueen. They refer to the Ravenqueen as ''The Fallen Freak'', blaming her for the cruel actions she laid upon her own creatures, the Kenku, amongst other things.
Guarc herself longs for a life of adventure and often sneaks out to spend the day with Phillius. Even though her family isn't a fan of Phillius, they can't deny his skills and hire him from time to time to keep an eye on their daughter, which is precisely how they met when they were younger. Whenever he is hired for a job to keep an eye on her or to escort her safely to a meeting he always makes sure to cheer her up from the boring life she has to live in.
Recently, Phandra had taken Guarc's fate into her own hands, as she has been planning to hold a large ball where she insists that Guarc will find a proper suitor to continue the family-line. Every man in the Vane Mountains and the surrounding areas has been invited if they are interested. Phillius has been hired to keep an eye out during the event.
Everyone that has some sort of past with love can clearly see that Phillius and Guarc are in love. The Dena family just refused to believe it. Guarc believes her family would send Phillius away from the Vane Mountains if they ever found out and Phillius wouldn't be able to live with himself if he couldn't see her again.
Mearome Dena
Guarc's mother is an original Dena, also having materialized wings behind her back. In her case these were bright golden wings similar to the colour of a burning fire.
She married Burrivil when they were young and she unfortunately passed away when Guarc was only 17 years old. This means that currently, Burrivil is the ruler of The Vane Mountains because Mearome passed away before Guarc turned 18. She was a sweet and forgiving woman for many considered her ''The Mother of the Valley''.
Her heart was open to all that sought an embrace and she truly was a woman of purely good intent. Much of that can also be seen in Guarc's personality.
Burrivil Dena
A strict father, Burrivil married into the Dena family. He is a man of little words, yet his face speaks thousands of words.
Even though he is currently the official leader of the Vane Mountains he does not receive the unending support his wife received. The reason behind this is that he isn't an actual Dena and married Mearome, the only reason why he is the leader is because his daughter Guarc wasn't 18 yet when her mother died.
He is aware of the glances the other Vanvali give him as he pretends to keep up this stern exterior.
Burrivil would do anything to properly be considered leader, or to at least have the backing behind his word.
He is very close to his mother, Phandra, whom also moved into the house when Burrivil and Mearome married.
Phandra Dena
Phandra is Burrivil's mother and therefore Guarc's grandmother. She is incredibly controlling of her son and presses this behaviour on him to aim at Guarc. She wants nothing more than power.
If Guarc has a child, that child has as much claim to become the ruler of the Vane Mountains as Guarc herself. Phandra sees this opportunity as a way to influence and manipulate a new leader who is actually a Dena and who will therefore gain the support of the people in the valley.
She treats Guarc horribly, yet she knows she could never actually hurt her without the people turning against her and ruin her plans.
Even though she loves her son Burrivil, her desperate need for power succeeds this.
Phandra is old, very old, even for a Vanvala. She is a powerful spellcaster and secretly despises Kindra.
