The Domain of Hazlan is one of arcane exploration and the disaster that can follow when mages only consider if they could rather than if they should. The land is a bastion of failed experiments and abandoned ambitions left to roam the countryside freely to reign terror on the populace. The Domain is ruled by the Red Wizard, the ultimate authority in all things who's name (Hazlik) is known but not uttered out of respect and fear.
Within the Hazlan, there is a cast system between the lower class, the Rashemani, who comprise 90% of the population and the ruling class, the Mulan, who make up the remaining 10% of the population. The Mulan rule the Rashemani with an iron fist, adhering to the religion of the Lawgiver, an oppressive faith where rebellion and disobedience is the ultimate moral sin. As such, the Rashemani lead lives of servitude and submission to their Mulan superiors who treat them with equal measures of cruelty and indifference.
Several decades ago, magic was the sole domain of the Red Wizard. Anyone practicing the arcane arts, whether Rashemani or Mulan, were put to death by order of Hazlik. After the Grand Conjuction, however, Hazlik's attitude completely changed. The study and exploration of magic became encouraged even among the Rashemani. In fact, one of the Red Wizard's closest apprentices. Eleni of Toyalis, is a female Rashemani of great power and potential. Hazlik even created the Red Academy, an institution dedicated to the progress of magic in the city of Sly-Var.
Suol came to this Domain when a group of adventures discovered a clutch of dragon eggs and sold his to an eccentric mage known as Alakaster. He performed experiments upon the egg attempting to unlock its secrets and understand its magical properties. Much to his dismay, the resulting hatchling was more humanoid than dragon. Realizing he had acquired more of a child than a pet, he placed Suol in the care of his trusted Rashemani house servants, Trevor and Selandra. The two were unable to have children of their own, so they welcomed the opportunity to care for the child as their own. Alakaster, despite his otherwise emotionless exterior, was not cruel to his Rashemani servants; an uncharacteristic trait of many of the Mulan. In fact, Suol recognized that the Rashemani in Alakaster's employ were treated remarkably well to the comparative cruelty of the wizard's peers.
Although they all lived in the same manor, Alakaster was constantly away on assignment studying one magical theory or another. Suol remembers one long stretch of time that took Alakaster to the northern end of the Domain for months at a time. Although Suol was unsure of the nature of his studies, he did overhear the mage discuss the location known as the Moonstone Valley and a curious Black Spire that rested in the center of region. What Suol did notice was the mental and physical toll these trips had on the wizard over the following months.
When Suol came of age and showed magical potential, Alakaster took a renewed interest in his draconic ward. He even gifted Suol with a talisman known as "the Eye of Hazlik," which protected him from the strange, unpredictable nature magic could have within the Domain of Hazlan. Suol would become Alakaster's apprentice and assist him both in his personal experiments and his work as a researcher within the Red Academy.
Together, they became renowned and sought after for deciphering ancient texts and uncovering the inner workings of strange artifacts and magical items, even among the accomplished sorcerers of Hazlan. They would travel across the continent and explore recently uncovered tombs and crypts, discovering their hidden mysteries. Upon returning from one of these trips, they received a message requesting help with a newly discovered dragon’s eggs located in Falkovnia. While Suol wasn’t familiar with this location, Alakaster seemed very reluctant to venture there. While Suol know it was unlikely, he wanted to investigate this in hopes it could provide insight into where the rest of his clutch went and if not, he could possibly find a way to return it to the dragon it was taken from. After hours of disagreement and discussion, Alakaster decided they would be declining this job; unable to accept this course, Suol decided to slip away and meet with their contact and accept the job solo.
People of Import:
Eleni is known as a young yet accomplished mage and the right hand of the Red Wizard, Hazlik. This is especially surprising considering Eleni's origins as a Rashemani. Moreover, Eleni has chosen to shave her head and tattoo her body, an act forbiden to the Rashemani who are required to grow their hair out long to indicate their social status. None confront her however, largely due to her favor with the Red Wizard and the rumors that she controls a giant albino purple worm known as "Gravedrinker."
Yhal the Skygazer
Yhal is stoic figure of immense power and the most familiar apprentice of the Red Wizard to Suol. For many years, Alakaster reported directly to the Skygazer who also spent a great deal of time among the Moonstone Valley. The sorcerer wears an ornate mask whenever in public, supposedly covering a hideous deformity cause by a magical experiment gone horribly wrong. On several occasions as a child, Suol would witnessed Alakaster and Yhal staring at each other for long stretches of time without uttering a word, and yet, somehow he knew there were lengthy conversations and orders occurring without speech. These observations would end quickly as both men would turn a baleful eye to the spying dragonborn child, causing him to flee in inexplicable terror.
Ruzelo
Perhaps the least is known about Ruzelo, the third apprentice to the Red Wizard. He is a man of secrecy and solitude, rarely appearing or interacting in the public eye for months at a time. Interestingly enough, Ruzelo and Alakaster seem to have a fairly amicable relationship comparative to the other apprentices. Suol had questioned this relationship before, to which Alakaster simply stated that Ruzelo owes him a favor.
