[Gautrek Fireforge speaking about his adventuring origins and earlier life]
”Since I was a child I have had the gift to be able to communicate with gods or their messengers. But when I was little, no one believed me. My parents were even scared of me and sent me to a mental asylum and never talked to me ever again. I later heard that they had died by the long night during my stay at the asylum. The asylum was a horrible and evil place, no place for a child. The memories from that time are memories I wish I could forget and never hear about again.
When I finally got out from the asylum I had to pick a craft to learn, I needed to support myself after all. It didn’t take long for me to find out what my calling was. The first time I saw Gilly Littletooth the town smithy, I fell in love right away, both in her and her work. She agreed upon mentoring me in the art of smithing, marrying me took a little more convincing. We had a child together, a son; Grorduck. We were a happy family and I also finished my training at the local Guild Hall. But then the war came, as in so many other places in the north.
I got drafted to protect the town, however I wasn't much help… During the big battle to protect the town I got knocked unconscious and would not remember anything from the battle. However, after the battle the town was in shambles, there wasn’t enough work for 2 smiths in the town, So I had to find another trade.
To my surprise, as an adult, people believed me when I told them I could communicate with the higher powers and I quite easily found work at the town temple. It was just some bureaucratic work but still work. But the money wasn't enough, I even tried to counterfeit some loan checks to help my family survive, thankfully I wasn’t sentenced , though caught. I knew this wouldn't work in the long run. I needed to find a better future for my family, a safer land where I could raise my son. So I decided to travel and find these lands, keeping in touch with my family through letters and praying for Gond’s protection.
As my adventure led me to the small village of Vernan I would meet my now closest friends. The dwarf Bardric Hardbeard, the local cleric, helped me a lot in those early days. Mentoring me into the basics of fighting, in the skills of survival and taught me everything he knew about the gods and the responsibilities of being a cleric. The other two close friends I met at the tavern, the Blindwhale. We had all been tasked with the same quest but from different folks, to kill the local gang leader that terrorized the village of Vernan. My new friends’ names were Boern Stoneclaw and Odette Delapearl. We never did manage to kill him but Stoneclaw managed to gauche his left eye out. However, even though the mission was not a success a trust was established between us and from then on, we helped each other on many small quests and missions commissioned by the townsfolk and travelers. We weren’t perhaps friends yet but good colleagues.
After months of helping the locals at Vernan, often together with my new found friends, I began to hear about a rumor in town. Apparently, a cult of some kind had been attacking traders and travelers along the mountain trails a couple of days' travel away. Stoneclaw had heard the same rumor and decided to join me. Odette however had already some quests to take care of in town, she also had her son with her, he would probably not handle the mountain travel that well.
For days we searched the trail for any clues of the cult's whereabouts. Well, we didn’t have to search for long as they would come to us. A surprise attack during the night after Stoneclaw managed to fall asleep during his watch. We both were taken hostages inside their camp in the mountain, hidden behind an illusionary wall.
They seemed to worship some kind of dragon, at the look of things. Their leader seemed to take a liking to Stoneclaw after a while.. He moved Stoneclaw to his private chamber higher up the mountain. I however wasn’t as lucky. I got tortured, humiliated and at one point they even discussed if they should sacrifice me to the dragon they worshiped. These events still haunt me to this day. After nearly 3 months of extreme torture, Odette showed up. She had sneaked through their camp and managed to free me. We then together headed up the mountain to rescue Stoneclaw. To our horror he was held hostage by the dragon itself!
A great battle took place but we were no match against the silver dragon. But then to all our surprise he returned to his humanoid form, revealing that he was Odette’s long lost husband and he had great plans for their son (that explains his odd looks). Apparently all this was part of his plan to kidnap their son from her. He returned to dragon form and flew towards Vernan. After we had fled from the rest of the cult and finally returned to the town her son was nowhere to be seen.
After these events we were closer than ever before, an inseparable team. As we traveled the northern realms together we began hearing about this new frontier, a place of great treasures, peace and prosperity. This was exactly what I had been searching for and it seemed to be true for the others as well. A way for us to start anew and for Odette to search for information about her son in the process.”
