Yinsen was exiled from his clan not long after he was hatched, before he was given a name. He doesn’t know why he was exiled, but he remembers the last act of mercy given him by his former clan. Rather than murdering him for his unknown transgression, they locked him in a small cage hanging from the end of long pole. Carrying the unnamed child far in advance like the light of an angler fish, a small group of elite members of the clan moved in a tireless procession. Each member of the group took turns with the burden, careful to never stop even for a moment as they traversed mountains, forests and oceans, taking the child as far from his homeland as possible. Though they stayed a careful distance from the cage at all times, they ruthlessly and ceaselessly prodded and tormented the boy day and night, and inflicted far worse tortures that he tries to forget. Only one member of the group treated the boy with even a modicum of kindness, though Yinsen barely recalls these mercies.
In the remotest peaks of [Mountain Range], at the winding stone staircase of a secluded monastery, the group left the boy, starving and nearly dead. He was taken in by the mysterious sect of monks. Here he was given the name Yinsen, given structure, a role, and the opportunity for solitary study. He was given a chance to hone the physical discipline necessary to rebuild his body which was broken by his exile, and the mental discipline to dispel the darkness of his painful memories and to block out those that he could not yet face.
Yinsen wasn’t raised with the intense loyalty for the clan common to other dragonborn, but the monks gave him the barest semblance of community, and so he feels the barest semblance of loyalty to them, viewing them as his clan to the fullest extent that he understands the concept. He understands the rational, logical reason for the community, as a means of survival and basic interpersonal connection, but he feels a greater connection to the solitude. He was taught discipline and the value of a specific role within a community, but he doesn’t fully understand the draw of outside relationships and friendships. For years he was sworn to isolation, seeing this as an extension of his exile at an early age, seeing it as simply the norm. For years, he only emerged into the outside world at the command of the leaders of the monastery. As another extension of his exile, he initially viewed personal growth as a completely solitary pursuit. However, the few times he left the austerity and seclusion of the small community of monks, he returned to his isolation with increasingly conflicted feelings, and a growing awareness of the limitations of a solitary lifestyle.
Feeling that he could no longer progress in his pursuit of personal growth and enlightenment within the isolation of the monastery, Yinsen decided to leave, to symbolically follow the path back to his homeland, to confront the darkness of his past, to shed the spiritual bonds that had been placed upon him.
