Naja is only the 3rd CFO the Coop has had. She has had the position for three years now, and she has had a precarious hold on it. Although the position is for life, there have been no less than four mysterious accidents that have come very close to taking her life. There is no direct evidence, but Naja believes these were orchestrated attempts on her life by Darmand Evrayl, son of the previous CFO, .
The positions of CEO (currently held by Fazul Pareen) and CFO are not hereditary positions. Instead, they are determined by who has the largest number of company shares at the time of succession. However, until Naja, every succession with both positions had passed from parent to child. Since the child would inherit all their parent's shares and combine them with their own, it has tended to work out that the children of each CEO or CFO have ended up having the most shares at the time of their parents' deaths. This was not the case when the previous CFO died. He had had a few bad years before his death, such that when his shares were combined with Darmand's, Naja still came out ahead. Most people expected her to turn down the position and for it to go to Darmand anyway. To their surprise, she accepted it and poured herself full-heartedly into it.
A lot of people were not happy with this, most of all Darmand himself. He has never been silent about expressing his disapproval and distaste in Naja's performance in the role; however, he has staunchly denied making any attempts on her life.
Since gaining the position of CFO, Naja has acquired the support of most of the Executive Council, particularly after reversing a couple of unpopular decisions made by her predecessor. A couple council members still support Darmand, however.
Naja is a determined individual, often seen as being a bit cold and humourless. Those closer to her, however, describe her as warm and kind. She just needs to be on constant alert for attempts on her life.
The first mysterious accident occurred about four months after Naja became CFO. She was working on her car when the jack holding it up snapped. She was nearly crushed under the car's weight. The was dismissed as a freak accident and even Naja thought it such until more accidents began to occur.
The second accident occurred only three weeks later, when the nano-shears Naja was using on a group of alpacas suffered a power surge and exploded. It killed three of Naja's alpacas and Naja suffered severe burns to her hands that took several months to heal properly. On investigation of the nano-shears, Naja found evidence of tampering. As best she could tell, the shears were supposed to shear her in half, but the tampering was amateur at best. Unfortunately, very few people in the Coop actually have the technical knowledge to confirm her discovery and those with the ability all claimed they found no evidence of tampering and said that she was just being paranoid and jumpy.
The next accident occurred a little under a year later, while the Coop was stopped in Zal. Naja and a couple others were relaxing in a local bar, when a portion of the ceiling collapsed. Luckily, she and the others with her heard the beams straining in time to get out of the way. The bar's proprietor insisted that the building was in good repair, but noted that it was a very old building. Again, most dismissed this as an unfortunate accident. After all, if it had been a deliberate attempt to kill her, how could the would-be murderer have known exactly where she would be sitting in order to engineer precisely that portion of the ceiling to collapse? Naja agreed that she couldn't explain that one.
The fourth accident occurred just a short time ago, at the end of Dec, 97 AF. The Coop was camped by the foothills of the Western Mountains. During the night a freak rockfall crushed her tent and injured several of her alpacas. By pure chance, she wasn't in the tent when the rockfall occurred.
There have been numerous other minor events as well, none particularly dangerous. In all likelihood, most of these have been actual accidents, but Naja feels that some have been engineered to frighten her.
