Atwood Payne was born in Caldera, a pirate shanty town. As an only child, his father taught him how to fish, spinning wild tales of his former life on the seas, and his mother taught him how to prepare and cook the fish. Although he loved his parents, he yearned to leave and explore the world.
Knowing it would be his only way of leaving town, at 19 he told his parents he was joining a pirate crew. His father, knowing it was his calling, gave him a good luck charm, a platinum ring made to look like 2 dolphins, holding a small sapphire. With his parents praying to the god Marlog for his continued safety, Atwood sailed off. He quickly made a name for himself onboard due to his cooking skills and would always be experimenting with new ingredients he'd find when they plundered other ships or eventually went to port.
After 4 years, his captain heard rumor of a dragon's lair north of Macenti. Knowing the fortune of treasure would be worth the danger, the captain told his crew and they set sail and docked at Macenti. They made their way up to the lair, but before they could get too far in, Kobolds ambushed them. Atwood and a couple others survived and were captured, while the captain and some others were slain.
