Personal history
There are two things that define Kaen above all others: luck, and regret.
It can be said that Kaen was incredibly lucky that the Chellish Lord that had his parents killed decided to do so the day after Kaen was born, rather than the day before. It is also probably quite lucky that the day after that, the Andoran revolution claimed the life of said Lord.
Shipped away to distant relatives in Ustalav, Kaen was once more lucky that he was only fourteen, and still several days from properly joining the aristocracy when they were all killed by the revolution there.
When he travelled to far off lands, it could be said that luck caused him to be stolen away by that unnamed beast (as the rest of the expedition was never heard from again), and luck again when said beast was killed by something altogether stranger, and seemingly uninterested in him.
Was it luck that he turned to drink then, so that he was asleep when he should have been at his post, in that horrid crusade long ago? “Dishonourably discharged” is probably better than “honorably killed”, is it not? Twenty five years later, and he's yet to drink another drop.
Never mention to Kaen that he was lucky to have been on crusade when he did. Returning disheveled and demoralized to the village he'd been living in prior, he was so looking forward to the neighbors he'd started to regard as friends, to the woman he was sure was warming to his gruff soldier's ways. The day he returned to a town razed and bare, his heart broke again, more than ever before.
He made some mistakes then, and promises he now hopes he never had to keep. He was never a priest, never studied the gods, and he’s not sure if the oath he swore is binding, since it was interrupted by lawmen who killed the rest of the cult, but happened to mistake him for a body already slain.
In the Goblinblood wars, he was lucky to show up late enough to miss most of the dying, instead dyeing his hands with blood and ash. Those dreams are always the harshest, and he still has trouble looking goblins in the eyes.
He's picked up some quirks in his years abroad, most notably perhaps, his trusty lute. Most would say he's of middling skill, playing mostly sad songs of his heart, and rowdy soldiers' songs he’s heard here and there. The Stag Lord, however, was displeased by his tunes, and sent Kaen away from his so called court. Though he didn't feel lucky then (as rarely he does), Kaen was lucky again, as the Stag Lord was ended less than a week later.
Beginning to feel his years, as well as his mortality, Kaen decided to make up for some of his past deeds. He turned to the gods, several all at once. Praying for guidance and forgiveness, most notably from Erastil, the betrayal of whom he feels most strongly about. He makes sure to always give one twentieth of his earnings to whatever churches he can, though when no one is looking, he still pays lip service to the dark god he once swore so much to. He hopes that it is enough to avoid his ire, but also not so much as to draw his attention.
Traveling recently to Lasttwall, Kaen had hoped to live out the rest of his life doing honest, honourable work, but then the Whispering Tyrant broke free, and as luck would have it, it happened to be on his day off, given to him so he could celebrate his fiftieth birthday.
Education
In his early years, he learned what was expected of him as a lower noble, but that was a lifetime ago. Since then he's mostly learned many ways to take a life - and one or two how to save one.
Failures & Embarrassments
Got drunk on watch during a crusade, leading to the deaths of a slew of sleeping soldiers.
Mental Trauma
By the time Kaen got to the Goblinblood Wars, the "good guys" were winning. What he did there could hardly be called warfare. It was butcher's work. A culling. He awakens some nights from nightmares of tiny bodies stacked high, of the smell of blood and ash. He awakens remembering that at the time, he enjoyed those things.
Morality & Philosophy
Kaen has done much evil in his life. He /needs/ to do better.
