While most Aarakocra prefer to remain in the sky, Deandra hails from generations of merchants. Her ancestors chose to leave an aerial lifestyle to grow their wealth in both knowledge and coin by opening themselves to trade with all of the earth-bound races. Her family is more comfortable on the ground and inside enclosed spaces than most of their kind.
 
Her parents chose her middle name as their wish for good fortune. Traditionally, the eldest son carries the family name. After having eight daughters, Dee’s father acknowledged he wasn’t getting any younger and named Dee as his heir and the one to carry on “Reynoldsson.”
 
However, Dee did not want to be a merchant. She much preferred to watch and talk to the customers, not to sell them trinkets, but to learn their stories and then put them to paper. She wrote her interviews as anonymous letters to the local publishing guild.
 
When distinct details in the “anonymous” letters revealed the son of a prominent businessman was found out to be having an affair with the son of another prominent businessman, both families threatened retribution by pulling their business from Reynoldsson’s Mercantile. Apologies on bended knee were made, hasty bargains were struck. It would never happen again, and Dee would be dealt with.
 
Her parents sent her to the monastery “to learn discipline.” She would be permitted to return when she outgrew her childish fantasies and was ready to accept her duties as the eldest of the Reynoldsson merchant family.
 
Dee learned much from the monks. She learned how to harness the magical energy called “ki,” and channel not only her own but also the ki within the bodies of others to influence movements and abilities.
 
She did learn discipline, but perhaps not in the way her parents intended. She learned to use her abilities to protect those who could not protect themselves, as the monks frequently traveled to the nearby towns to defend their neighbors from monsters and raiders. Her desire to wield a quill as a force for good only grew.
 
Dee returned to Vallarcia after two years of training. She found the entire merchant guild under the thumb of the mayor, who used the city guards as his personal militia to collect exorbitant taxes in exchange for “protection” from the black market group, Daybreak. Disguising herself with the help of a magic-user, she infiltrated Daybreak only to discover it too was under the mayor's control.
 
Her exposé brought attention and soldiers from the governor. While they restored order in Vallarcia, the deposed mayor and Daybreak sent assassins to dispatch our intrepid reporter. And so she flees for now, and continues to use her quill for good…

Physical Description

Dee stands about 5' tall. Her legs take up about half of it. Her feathers are mostly white, with black around her wings, tail, and sticking upright from her head. She has exceptionally long lashes and orange skin on her face.

Apparel & Accessories

She wears whatever clothing is right for the occasion, but tries to stick with sensible garments that will allow her to fly if needed. She has a large cloak to cover up entirely when she needs to be unobtrusive.

Special abilities

She can jump quite high and fly due to her long legs, hollow bones and expansive wings.

Personal history

As a merchant's daughter, Dee has a keen eye for quality goods. She is alert and notices those who would help themselves to the five-finger discount. She is accustomed to bargaining and talking strangers into friends. As one of the most preeminent sellers in Vallarcia, with a wide range of goods, Dee has talked to people from all walks of life.
Dee watches as events unfold around her and listens to the stories told to her by others. She transcribes them faithfully, with little flourish, as they are often interesting enough on their own! She is always prepared with her journal, ink, and quill (even if she has to pluck it from herself).

Education

Homeschooling from her merchant parents, she knows how to read, write, and perform mathematics in her head.
 
The monks of the New Moon Monastery taught her how to focus and meditate, self defense, and control of ki.

Session 1 CliffsNotes 1/13/22

Hoods are removed from our heads. We are in a dark, damp cavern. There’s cheering in the distance. All equipment has been removed, we are in rags. Our ankles are shackled to each other with 10 ft of chain between each of us. Surrounded by several hobgoblins.
 
A table in the center with weapons and magical foci:
4 daggers
4 maces
1 net
4 shields
4 short swords
4 spears
4 scimitars
4 whips
4 quarterstaffs
Assortment of foci (including a silvery gold orb and a stuffed squirrel)

  • 5’ tall, half of which is legs. Pale skin except for the orange on my face. Covered with white feathers other than black around the wings and tail and sticking up from my head. I use a head quill to take notes on myself.

    • Trent: Fresident Nacho Shaykahbaybie - Male Goliath Cleric
  • 7’3” very built barbaric man. Gray ashen skin. Ripped/very muscular. Very stoic expression. Dark penetrating eyes of undetermined color. Dark brown hair - Bald on top, ring around crown (monk style), long in back (mullet). His rag tank top strap broke when flexing R shoulder.

  • Quarterstaff & gold/silver orb focus


    • Joel: Geppetto - Male Forest Gnome Druid
  • Very old. Dirty. Brown hair and eyes. 28lbs, 3' tall. Has gnome-sized rags that are dirtier than everyone else’s. Offers goodberries to everyone after he has his focus.

  • Stuffed squirrel focus


    • Josh: Queso Blanco - Male Wood Elf Warlock
  • 6' tall, purple hair, tanned skin, green eyes. Suave/ripped/muscular/skinny/slender. Rags are a crop top and shorts. Hung a dead starfish on the front of his shirt. Likes to look cool.

  • Quarterstaff and focus and short sword


    • Michael: Ja’ Deite - Female Earth Genasi Ranger
  • Her rags look couture on her. Sexy, like they’ve been strategically ripped. Not as well endowed as Michael wanted. DM requests roll for it. B cups. 5’7”, slender, fit physique. Dark skin with greenish tint, full head of fiery copper hair, green eyes that reflect like emeralds in the light.

  • Scimitar & Shield


    • We are led through a tunnel, hobgoblin tells us we are property of Gladwin Greger and are prisoners to provide entertainment in the arena.
     
    Gladwin Greger = Pirate who owns Greger’s Grotto. Human male, bald, thick red beard. (Only Joel knows who he is)
     
    The arena has 40’ vertical walls of stone. The ground is dirt and sand and blood. A viewing area has been hewn from the rock. No roof, open sky above. We battle another group of prisoners (6, unchained). They refuse not to fight and believe escape is impossible. We whoop their asses. Trent introduces us as the Cloacas to Greger and is proud that he learned that word from “the wisest creature in the world.” He is the wisest in his village for learning the word and that “It is the thing between your legs that whoopsies come out of.” We are disarmed again (Joel fights to keep his squirrel to no avail) and have started to be led back to the prison.
     
    Notes:
    At this time we only know Nacho’s name. I do not know races or classes specifically. Michael is already antagonizing Josh. Josh speaks Goblin. Joel knows who Gladwin Greger is but chose not to share with anyone. Trent tells us he’s a soldier. Josh mentions he wishes he was with his warriors.
