Personal history
Driscoll Lake spent his formative years as an amateur archeologist and a student of ancient languages. Later, as a college student, his study of ancient texts and civilizations of antiquity often led him to the discovery of mysterious artifacts and rare texts.
But up to this point, Driscoll’s life had been uneventful. For twenty-eight years, his only obscure oddity in life was having a false-eye. The result of a birth defect, his right eye never fully formed and was surgically removed soon after birth.
So it was somewhat remarkable that, when on a chartered archaeological expedition in a recently discoverec Egyptian tomb, Driscoll’s team found a room with several indecipherable texts...and a diamond in the shape of an eye. Without a thought, Driscoll knew the “Diamond Eye” was his. He conspicuously took the diamond, removed his false eye, and placed the diamond in his empty socket.
The reaction from his peers was surprise and terror, as the room filled with blinding light. But the eye had already begun to fuse into Driscoll’s skull with a surge of burning pain. Driscoll screamed and then fainted.
When he awoke, Driscoll was in a prison cell. He would later learn that Egyptian officials had attempted to remove the diamond, but that his professor and peers had intervened on his behalf and the college had called upon the US Embassy who, in turn, made arrangements for Driscoll to be transferred and then tried in US courts.
Driscoll was surprised to find that his legal defense had been sponsored by someone named, “Lukus Renfroe”. Needless to say, with the assistance from Lukus’ legal team, the case never went to trial. Though as a plea bargain, Driscoll was placed on house arrest for seven years. [The courts decided it was inhumane to surgically remove the diamond, particularly because it had inexplicably ‘fused’ into his nervous system.]
One week after the house arrest went into effect, a mysterious book arrived in the mail for Driscoll with no return address. It was written in a script he’d never before seen...but he was able to read it with his Diamond Eye. And he could read it fast. New books arrived every week — when the new book arrived, the old one would vanish. But Driscoll could somehow remember everything he’d read, literally word for word.
For the next seven years, Driscoll studied and remembered everything he’d read from the books. He learned how to use his Diamond Eye, often looking into the astral plane with awe and wonder. Driscoll also grew more powerful, innately. In the fourth year of his house arrest, books began to arrive more frequently along with notes of scribbled advice. He read everything, but Driscoll never knew who had been sending him these books and handwritten letters.
On the week his house arrest ended, a formal letter arrived in the afternoon mail with an invitation to undergo training as an Acolyte in the Trismegistus Council. After a brief written explanation of what the invitation entailed, a familiar handwritten instruction was added at the bottom of the letter,
“If you want to join the council, then speak these words aloud and you’ll be transported through the Astral Plane to my location — “Teg Thadde Hadratha”.
Driscoll was silent for a moment as he thought through the letter’s invitation. His eyes lingered over the final words, “Teg Thadde Hadratha”. As he replayed those words in his mind, Driscoll’s surroundings began to vanish and he found himself seated at a table along with three individuals who were having a breakfast meal together. An older gentlemen spoke animatedly,
“Well, that was a quick decision, Lukus...I guess there really was never a question if he’d join.”
Lukus spoke to Driscoll instead of responding to the man’s question, “Welcome.” He smiled and continued, “My name is Lukus Renfroe. I’m glad to meet you. I’m also very glad you accepted the invitation and spoke the true name of “transport” through the astral planes. But...” he paused with a confused look, “You look quite surprised...why is that Driscoll?”
Driscoll exhaled slowly and then responded, “I never spoke the words.”
