Personal history
Gideon (22) was born in 1980 to a multi-generational Church of Mormon of Latter Day Saints family living in Idaho. Mother (Eden Rees ) and Father (Jared Smoot) moved to Idaho from Utah when Gideon was 16, after the drowning of their youngest son (Aaron) when he was 10 years old.
Years if grief and help from the church has made Gideon's relationship with his parents very strong. They leaned on each other during these times, causing Gideon to delay his mission.
When he finally journeys to the san francisco- oakland mission, he is partnered with brother Chris Porter (20) and outfitted with a church van. The first year of the mission went as expected, until they came upon the sleepy seaside town of Hushwood. After only two weeks proselytizing, Chris turns up missing. An investigation takes place and Gideon is forced to remain in the town while the police look into the disappearance. After nothing was turned up Gideon was free leave, and was ordered by the church to return home. Following a sense of obligation and risking excommunication, he refuses the churches orders and begins his own investigation. He calls his parents weekly and they wont say it to him, but they are proud of his decision.
During his mission work, he became somewhat acquainted with a woman by the name of Jane Meyer. They enjoyed sharing drinks and sweets while discussing theology and the human condition. Gideon enjoyed these visits and found them quite mentally stimulating.
As he continued his own investigation he remained true to his mission work, proselytizing throughout the town on days that he found the time to do so. On one of these visits he was let into the home of someone who seemed quite eager. While getting into the talk about the book a knock at the door interrupts the two. Jaeger Toten enters the home dressed in Mormon attire, momentarily confused, the owner of the home shows their true form of a skinwalker. A fight breaks out during which Gideon is gravely wounded, but somehow manages to save the life of Jaeger, and kill the monster. Jaeger shows Gideon behind the veil and begins training him in the ways of being a hunter. Gideon finds this to be his true calling, confirming everything in his life that led to him being an actual warrior of God, cleansing the world of abominations against the light.
Gideon is introduced to the tailor shop, and sees his friend, Jane and cousin, Lester, are both apart of the organization. As well as a full fledged werewolf, who they neglected to tell him was such a creature. They felt the need to keep his existence secret from the organization they receive orders from- the bohemian order- Because of this, one night when left alone, Gideon rants about how excited he is to rid the world of these monsters. Not being able to contain his discomfort any longer, Michael Ward transforms, Gideon and Ward fight briefly and Gideon manages to shoot him before he's stopped by the others. Slowly Gideon learns to respect Michael and begins to understand that the monsters don’t always look like monsters.
When Gideon was around 6 years old, Eden's sister () fell in love with a man outside of the church and chose to elope, causing her to become excommunicated. Gideon's mother never discussed her sister, although they have remained in secret communication since her departure. She has since given birth to Lester Stroff, who happens to live in the small town of Hushwood. Gideon is introduced after the veil is broken. He questions his mother who fills him in, while Lester had known of Gideons existence his whole life, his mother not worried about offending the church at this point. Reluctantly Gideon feels he would do anything for family, even though he doesn’t quite trust Lester, and Lester seems to see this and take advantage of this fact any chance they get.
