As a wizard, Owen has proven to be a dangerous mixture of disciplined and volatile, showing great aptitude across most subjects, especially in the more practical sides of magic. Unafraid of hard work, and eager to learn, he has already marked himself out as someone to be watched by a number of prominent wizards, both as a wand maker, a duelist, and a wizard of many abilities
Appearance
Physical Description
Looks older than he is, with a wiry frame, dark features, and unusually dark stubble for someone his age. He might struggle to pass for an adult, though with his scars he usually manages. No-one wants to imagine a kid with scars like that.
Body Features
A smattering of freckles which tend to come out in the summer, and a tapestry of scars, old and new, most notably s number of burns, including one around an eye that's not immediately obvious as a fake and a few smaller wounds left with the twisted scar tissue left by old, dark wounds
Facial Features
Strong jaw, if tending towards narrow, surprisingly full lashes for a man, and a scar straight across the bridge of his nose, as well as some smaller scars on the chin. More recent is a burn scar from the left side of his nose to the side of his face, running directly across an eye that is remarkably hard to notice as a prosthetic. The opposite cheek has a slightly curved scar running the line of the cheek-bone
Identifying Characteristics
Facial burn, false eye, scars, calm eyes, cocky grin
Physical quirks
Fairly long fingers which he tends to twitch and drum, keeping them limber. Oddly precise movements, even when startled. Constantly darting eyes. Hands never far from his wand. Remarkable flexibility.
Apparel & Accessories
Hogwarts robes most often, although favors close-fit jeans and dark long-sleeved tees for street wear. Wears doc martens with either. Also consistently has a pair of dueling holsters on either wrist. Has taken to wearing a jacket of tough, dark denim, even under his school robes, and a leather jacket over that in street wear.
Specialized Equipment
A collection of wand makers tools, a specialized library, and some quality alchemy equipment, as well as a well-made quidditch broom. A spatially-enhanced wand case, and a collection of more than 2 dozen wands, as well as a small private orchard of rare trees
Special abilities
Wand making, dueling, magical creature handling, general personal awareness, people skills, teaching, adaptive magic.
Mentality
Personal history
Distant parents, much of Owens early life was spent looking after his father as much as he was looked after in turn. A good relationship with an aunt and uncle who had cared more, and had ties to muggle rights organizations led Owen to develop truly held anti-voldemort beliefs from a young age. Those beliefs became muddled when his uncle was killed by a death-eater using one of Owen's fathers wand and his aunt, whom Owen had always admired, cut his side of the family from her life.
His time at Hogwarts saw Owen seeking to succeed with a feverish determination, making a strong impression on a number of figures and, more importantly, collecting magical knowledge that would astound most wizards his age with its breadth. His early achievements in wand making are particularly impressive, although more widely acknowledged and understood is his skill in martial magic. Blames himself for the death of his father. Threw himself into new cultures and study as a method of escape, honing an already sharp mind into a dangerous intellect, his drive making him much more fearsome than even older & more experienced wizards, as proven by his drawing as champion.
Education
Slightly sporadic muggle primary education, supplement with a fair amount of background reading on various subjects at a local library as they caught Owens interest, notably military history and the birth of Hong Kong cinema. His wizarding education has given him a strong grounding in most magical subjects, Owen enjoying excellent results in all of his early exams, and his international and personal studies have marked him out as an exceptional enchanter for his age, and devastating practical caster.
Employment
While not official, Owen has helped in his fathers work as a wand maker since before he can even recall. He has continued to produce wands for the use of himself and his friends ever since, while maintaining an entrepreneurial spirit as needed. As of now, he's working on developing a line of Vance Signature wands for stock in other shops, and has a prime booth reserved at the international magical crafts fair this summer.
Accomplishments & Achievements
Wand maker before the age of 12, European international juniors dueling champion, defeater of a death eater, member of Gryfindor quidditch team, invitee to both Duurmstraang & Makuhito, visiting scholar at Mahukito, twi-wizard champion, intern to Albus Dumbledore, honorary member of the Order of the Phoenix.
Failures & Embarrassments
Some academic difficulties, most of which are a largely personal shame, although he still strongly regrets the public snapping of Masie Wolfe's wand in a duel, despite personally providing a better matched replacement. He regrets mis-handling his relationship with Fae Chambers, although does feel it best for both of them that it came to an end. Blames himself for the death of his father.
Mental Trauma
Trust issues from his childhood, as well as general trauma from loss and a war-time upbringing, as well as complex abandonment issues around his aunt, for which he largely blames his father, as he does many of his issues.
During his time at Hogwarts he was briefly plagued by an imp, leavng him with recurring nightmares he still struggles with, and while he eventually defeated it, he still has an enduring dislike of the creatures. Later, an attack by a death eater taking the guise of a teacher saw him subjected to the cruciatus curse, and led to Owen himself employing dark magic in his defense, something he has complex feelings on. The later loss of an eye to dark fire from the same teacher did not help matters.
Following the prolonged psychic attacks of the following year, the physical trauma of a lost hand, even one that was re-grown, and the death of his father, Owen has slowly started to become somewhat numb to trauma. As of now, his biggest issue is an inability to seek help or delegate responsibility, leading him to take on a lot of stress which, while massively helpful to his growth in the short-term, is likely to lead to ongoing issues over time.
Intellectual Characteristics
Would self describe as street-smart but not book-smart, Owen has a natural ability with spellcasting and practical work, but struggles a fair amount with academic work, with it often proving a letdown to his performance in school.
Prone to periods of high focus interspersed with moments of almost obsessive down-time, Owen approaches all tasks, including self care, with an obsession that can be both blessing and curse at times.
Additionally, he feels a degree of responsibility towards others that is unusual for anyone, but especially someone of his age. He struggles severely to let people down, and is slow to make promises for fear of breaking them, something which he will not allow.
Additionally, he's quick to reach out to people he even feels are in distress, and somewhat struggles to form meaningful relationships due to his efforts to spend time with so many individuals.
Morality & Philosophy
Growing up in a wartime atmosphere, Owen has a strong dislike of dark magic, driven in no small part by fear. While he has strong feelings about protecting the weak, and not harming others, much of his thoughts center on strength as a mechanism to do good, as power will allow him to protect himself and others, and this has the potential to lead him down troubling paths.
When confronted by Albus Dumbledore with the man's own investigations into dark things at a young age, Owen revised his idea of dark magic, beginning to view it as a tool, dangerous, but only if not carefully controlled. To reconcile this, he doubled down on his belief in doing good with strength, seeking dark secrets and power, yet using them at every turn to fight evil where he sees it.
Since the death of his father, a strong ideal of personal responsibility has become part of his thoughts, though he struggles to apply it to others to the same degree as he does himself. That said, control is a central tenant of his in almost everything he does.
person.sexuality
While a teenager still going through his awkward puberty, Owen has shown strong romantic attachment, and felt the pain of breaking that attachment. More than any individual preference, what Owen has mostly shown is a strong aspect of devotion in relationships. That said, as he grows older, he's shown a fairly standard heterosexual interest in women, though it might be argued that ideas of familial responsibility have guided him in such choices
person.gender_identity
Owen is 15 and it is the 1980's. He's largely comfortable as a man, and is unlikely to be in a position to question that identity, but he does have an appreciation for the styles and ideas of glam-rock, and is comfortable with outfits and styles that aren't traditionally masculine.
Taboos
Owen holds strong views on the rights of muggles and muggleborns, even for the time, and forms a extreme dislike of those who speak against them. Additionally, he has powerful views on the rights of so called 'beings', creatures seen as lesser by wizarding society which he sees as a great injustice. Werewolves, goblins, house-elves and others all deserve equal rights, to his mind.
On the other hand, he has a very practical view on wands, largely ignoring the taboo of owning multiple, and actively and openly discussing the generally closely-kept secrets of wand lore. Indeed, he sometimes derides the traditional conventions of wand use and ownership as held by most wizards, pushing for a mixture of evidence-based and common-sense changes to standard practices.
Additionally, he has made use of dark magic, in either dire or highly controlled circumstances, with his personal view on the subject best stated as 'turnabout is fair play'. While he doesn't make use of it in his own time, nor care for it as a subject, he considers sufficient understanding of it both to counter it, and to use it against those who would first raise it as a weapon an almost vital part of an education in practical martial magic.
Known Languages
English and German (learned at the insistence of his father as 'the language of wand makers'), French (picked up from the Feret sisters), Arabic (from his mother, the daughter of Lebanese immigrants, in which he keeps his more private notes), Japanese (learned during a year abroad), as well as smatterings of Spanish, Portuguese, a number of eastern-European & Nordic languages, and Igbo.
Additionally can translate Ogham into English script, though not read the proto-Celtic with which it is generally associated, and recognizes the runes of the Elder Futhark by sight.
Personality
Motivation
Owen is strongly motivated by a desire for the power to defend himself and others, which might also be called fear. This is alloyed with an increasing curiosity, driving him to seek lost secrets to make his style truly his own. A sense of personal responsibility combines this into a truly formidable individual.

Wealth & Financial state
From an upper middle lass family, Owen receives a comfortable allowance, and after managing the family finances for some time has also set aside a fair amount of money for emergencies. More recently, his mother stepped up, finding more stable employment in the US, as Owen himself began developing and amassing a degree of personal wealth through work, savings, and savvy investments (which totally were not gambling), leading him to be remarkably wealthy for an independent teenager.
Family Ties
Member of the Vance family, a minor but established wizarding family, with a centuries long legacy as wand makers, and even deeper roots. Currently dating Lema Dourkiss, daughter of the muggle countess of East Anglia
Religious Views
Believer in the soul, and believes that many pantheons of so-called lesser gods such as the norse, hellenic, and celtic are based on ancient wizards who first discovered the making of wands. Holds with the ideal that everything has a spul, to some degree or other, as held by Shinto.
Social Aptitude
Surprisingly competent. Owen is often viewed as fairly intimidating by classmates from a distances, but is quick with a joke and a good listener, eager to please, and so makes friends with surprising ease when he can bring himself to try. His detached attitude also make him something of a romantic figure, both to amorous young women, and those seeking a figure to place on a pedestal as a rival or standard to be striven towards. Owen tends to make many more friends than enemies, although those few he does make seem to hold a serious grudge.
Mannerisms
Quiet. Left to his own devices, Owen generally says little, and in a group dynamic tends to build up others rather than leading. That said, a casual ability to listen, strong insight, and strong abilities tend to leave a strong impression on others. Additionally, given the increasing way in which he continues to stand out, Owen has developed something of a self-effacing attitude, claiming that others would do better in certain areas, or that much of his success was circumstantial, and never failing to attribute his success to those who helped or taught him, especially when that praise is earned.
Hobbies & Pets
Owen has a small menagerie of magical creatures which he cares for, though he considers them more companions than pets. They include Luis the Bowtruckle, Teddy the niffler rogue, Dog the kitsune, and an as-yet unnamed demiguise with a penchant for theft.
Owen is a keen duelist and fascinated with wand lore and connected subjects. He also has a passing interest in quidditch, playing for the house team. Supports the Wimbourne Wasps, despite privately admitting them to be a poor team.
Additionally, he has a strong love for muggle music and cinema, especially rock music and action movies. He strongly believes that wizards massively under-utilize muggle ideas, from their culture and art to their technology, and he swears he will one day convince hogwarts to convert to ball-point pens
Speech
Owen has a mild London accent with a trace of clipped vowels from the early practice of German, an a surprising level of precision, lacking many filler sounds and words, and very seldom stumbling over his speech. He has a fairly deep voice for his age and size, not remarkably so, but enough to sound solid and reassuring despite his fairly wiry build
