Argus has a bit of a tragic background. He was born and raised in the village of Catinis, the mid part of the Mardous Kingdom. The Mardous Kingdom is relatively recent, formed when a large merchant convoy was caught in a storm and shipwrecked on the continent over 500 years ago. I strange beginning, but despite the chaos the survivors decided to carve out a bit of order and formed the independent kingdom of Mardous. Utilizing the rich resources surrounding the land, they were quick to establish a trade network after formally establishing their government, stabilizing their economy and with the influx of people to the island would become a small, but thriving kingdom, later expanding and creating the capital of Torvanus. Trade routes from the agriculture of Lanirich and the metals of Korim would be established. In their expansion however, they would realize they were not alone. A small colony of sea elves were discovered living at the mouth of a river on the coast and the kingdom made peace, establishing the city of Ilpatar. Further north, swamps abound, and living within those swamps lived a race of lizardfolk, which forged a kingdom known as Lizinfoos. The lizardfolk were quick to identify themselves as a hostile force, practicing human sacrifice in the name of their dark god, Umiletocotoli. This race of lizardfolk, a race normally low in intelligence, was able to forge metal tools and learned how to tame and breed the lightning wielding behirs that roamed the land. War was quick to break out into the land, the first ending in a stalemate despite help from Korim, with neither party gaining ground. After a 5-year break, a second war broke out, but the Kingdom of Mardous gained the upper hand thanks to reinforcements from the Island of Lanirich, popular trade kingdom. With aid at their side, they were able to push the lizardmen back into their swamps. Argus lived a normal childhood, learning both common and elvish especially since the city of Ilpater was nearby. He entered the first war at age 16, quickly earning a reputation as a powerful fighter against the lizards. Being promoted into commander at age 20. He was not invincible however and would inevitably suffer heavy casualties whenever the behirs were utilized. But somehow, by skill or luck, he survived and would be given a large sum of gold for his services. He would settle in the quiet village of Quincy, until one day his pocket was picked by a stranger while out in the market. He caught the stranger, revealing her to be a half- elven woman. Realizing the situation, he simply gave her advice to choose a better life path than this and let her have the gold she lifted. After several more encounters with this woman, an unlikely love was formed between the two and would go on to be married. The woman’s name was Amberle Eldresa. They would go on to have a daughter, Cynthia, and the two would live happily until the second war with the lizards broke out. Argus was pulled back into service and battle resumed until worrying reports of on-site human sacrifice began surfacing, which was occurring in many villages, evidently a desperate attempt to summon their god to punish the “smooth-skins”. Argus was most concerned when he heard reports that the attacks were getting closer to the village of Quincy. Fearful, he and a medium sized group of soldiers quickly marched to Quincy, only to find death and destruction. The lizardfolk had executed all the villagers and were one by one feeding the bodies to the behir they brought with them. In a rage, Argus with his men slayed the lizards and the behir, hopeful that maybe the survived. Alas, they did not. A broken man, his rage of the lizards would know no bounds. Were it not for his friend Medic, a tough dwarven cleric from Korim, he would have died long ago, perhaps by his own hand. He met Medic during the first war, and as part of an agreement for Korim’s aid, Mardous sent Argus and a small regiment to aid Medic in stopping some rampaging duergar near in the Kingdom of Korim. The two would stop the dark dwarves and become practically brothers. Saddened by his friend’s tragedy, Medic did his best to cheer Argus up. His jolly nature and the uncanny ability to know exactly what to say lifted the damaged soul of Argus to some normalcy, but the loss would never be gone from his mind. 2 years pass and in an effort to relieve some pent-up anguish, began traveling across the sea to Lanirich, hearing rumors of strife in their kingdom. He would find his old friend Medic in the town of Vamola. And that is where our story begins.
