Kain Shapour, son of Dawn Shapour, and step-son of Peren Amakiir, is a human wizard, new to the arts, but born with a mind ripped open to the psionic energy of the world.
Many years ago Kain's mother, Dawn, came to Spiderhaunt chasing a rumor. Hailing from a family of silk producers to the southeast of Calimshan, Dawn was hunting the legend of a rare form of spider called the Hyivinth Gemweaver, which can produce a form of silk as strong as mithril. Dawn's journey across the sword coast, and as far as Icewind Dale, is an adventure worthy of telling in its own right (she is effectively a 5th level char: 2 levels rogue, 3 artificer--her artificing specializes in textiles), but was ultimately fruitless, and eventually led to her Spiderhaunt, if for no other reason than its name.
Her resources nearly depleted, Dawn decided to stay in Spiderhaunt for a time, using her knowledge of silk weaving to improve the simple cloths of the people of Spiderhaunt. In time she grew to love the town; something about its rough beauty and simple people grabbing at her soul. She set up a weaving shop in town and, in time, became a respected member of the community. And then the wind came.
Five years after her arrival in Spiderhaunt, an unseasonably warm wind came with the spring, bringing early life, and feverish energy to the community. The leadership of the Spiderhaunt, such as it is, took it as a good omen, and ordained a festival to celebrate the early retreat of winter. It was a wild evening, full of drink and lust, with a taunt energy thrumming through the very land. That night, Dawn met a human man named Ammanas who said he was a part of a caravan passing through the area. In the warm air of the festival, the normal suspicions of such a claim were set aside, and for Dawn, his charm was inescapable, and she spent the night with him. In the morning he was gone. Dawn took this with stride, but deep down she suspected there was more to her encounter than an evenings whimsy. A month later and her suspicions were proven correct. She was pregnant.
She was three months into her pregnancy when she met Peren Amakiir. A silk producer from Cormanthor, Peren had spent nearly 80 years also chasing the rumors of the Gemweaver spider, finding Spiderhaunt for the same reason as Dawn. It was love at first sight for Dawn and Peren, or more accurately, love at first discussion on the finer processes of sericulture. They married within weeks, with Peren making it clear that he cared not that she carried some other mans child, for he was over 400 years old, and was beyond worrying about such things. He swore to stay in Spiderhaunt and care for the child she carried as his own. And he would. Five months later, and dawn gives birth to a baby boy.
Kain grew up in a quiet, but elegant household. The traditional styles of eastern Calimshan culture and elven aesthetics lent to an open, clear, and austere setting (think a combination of Arabian and Rivendell). Working as a team, Dawn and Peren's weaving grew to be a thriving business called "The Spider's Threads". With Dawns artificing skills, and Perens magic, they have designed several automanced looms, with which they produce local, tough fabrics. They also have a small silk production going on, which consumes the majority of their time, though most of their silk trade heads to Almorel. Eventually Dawn and Peren had children of their own, a boy and a girl, Laucian Amakiir Shapour (boy) and Atala Amakiir Shapour. Both are roughly 8 years Kain's junior.
Kain's magical aptitude was obvious to Dawn and Peren at an early age. Peren, coming from a family of high-elves, and having knowledge of the wizardly arts himself (lvl 5 wizard with the bladesinger subclass), took it upon himself to train the boy. Growing up, Kain often complained about hearing voices, and when in a foul mood, caused objects around him to move. Peren chalked this up to his magical abilities, but Dawn suspected it was due more to the suspicious character that fathered him, Ammanas. As Kain grew to adulthood, he began to understand that the voices he heard were the thoughts and memories of those around him. He learned to control this ability, somewhat, though they still overtake him at times. His friends know of his abilities in this regard, but he has asked them to keep it quiet.
Of his biological father, Kain has honestly thought very little of it. He has never considered Peren as anything other than his father, with the whole subject being one of the few things that will make him angry.
Nearing adulthood, Kain has become obsessed with two subjects: the Elder Arcanum, and the Gemweaver spider. The Elder Arcanum is a philosophical concept amidst a small sect of wizards that says that all the trappings of spellcasting are superfluous, and that magic in its truest form is an energy divided from the gods and the material world. This obsession informs his background, as the Elder Arcanum is largely a scholarly pursuit. His subclass as a wizard (divination) is due to his goal of learning these secrets, as well as his minds psionic sensitivity. This later point feature, psionics, dictates his subclass as a sorcerer, and is the font of his powers related to his sorcerer side.
His second obsession, the Gemweaver, comes obviously from his parents, as he grew up hearing stories about the spider. He secretly hopes to finish their quest one day: find the gemweaver and bring it home so they could finally make the silk they had always dreamed of.
He also has several other research subjects he is interested in. He has a particular passion for the force spells, of those that specifically manipulate it, as he finds their kinetic theoretical underpinnings fascinating. He also seeks to design and build a 'temporal and mnemonic spellbook'; basically a spellbook bound to an interstitial demi-plane within his own mind. At the start of the adventure this project is very much in its infancy.
At the start of the adventure Kain is a tall, pale, thin man--the kind of guy who often forgets to eat--with green eyes and light brown hair he keeps braided in elven styles. He is a relatively good-looking guy, and his abilities make him a naturally empathic person, nurturing in him a kind of solid kindness and good-natured quality, if a bit of a know-it-all. He wears good quality clothing, wizardly robes in particular, of elven design and cut made from the silks his family produces. All of this has made him rather popular within the community of Spiderhaunt, despite his scholarly ways. His relationship with his parents is good, and he adores his younger siblings, often consoling them with his telepathic abilities. His four best friends, however, make up the heart of his world, and he protects them to the best of his abilities, particularly Pip and Dea (though they really don’t need it), from the less than pleasant humans of Spiderhaunt.
