Personal history
Madeline's husband, Richard Applegate, served in the U.S. navy during the first world war. He worked on a naval ship transporting supplies across the Mediterranean. While out in service Richard wrote many letters to his beloved Maddie. In quite a few of them he describe a few interesting encounters in the city of Alexandria. A city he describes as "The land of mystical enlightenment." Eventually the ship Richard served on was sunk by a German U-Boat and he was tragically lost to the sea. Meanwhile during the war Madeleine did her part to try to help her husband. During the time the U.S. participated in the great war and even a few years after Madeline worked in whatever factories would take her, preferring to work as a seamstress making uniforms for the boys across the pond. Some time after the conclusion of the war Madeline saved the money she had been saving and took a trip to Alexandria in search for closure and out of curiosity of the wonders described to her by her husband.
Madeleine has recently been visiting the Karmoz Literary Club inquiring with other authors about the kind of wonders her husband wrote to her about.
