A New Friend
Today was a day, just like any other, but with perhaps a bit more flavor.
I set out from the slums, in search of some good scroll paper for a rather financially challenged buyer. I don't work for free, but when a moderately-wealthy band of slavers is in town and their stocks are *just sitting there,* I can offer up these items at an incredibly steep discount. There's a reason they say "Ray finds a way," after all.
These particular marks seem to have taken up temporary lodgings in a recently abandoned building, "recently" as in "I met the former tenants on the way in." I had no plans on evicting squatters today, but given these circumstances, I'd argue that this is more of a "neighborhood beautification" project.
As I made my way inside thanks to the assistance of a displaced and perturbed peasant father (who always left a side window unlatched), I noticed that these particular slavers came with a "prize," or at least what their ilk would consider to be one. This particular room was barred from the other side, and as I came through the window, I almost landed directly on top of a massive fellow. I drew my blade and prepared for the worst, only to notice the shackles that were barely able to contain the fellow's wrists and ankles.
I sheathed my weapon, and after a bit of broken and awkward whispered conversation, determined that this was Bakchuu, a poor fellow who only happened to be here due to his absolutely imposing frame. These slavers, seeing what they would assume would make a fine workhorse, failed to realize that this creature could most likely break these chains if provoked enough to *really* piss them off.
I'm not one to leave such things to chance, however. If this fellow happens to stage such an escape while I'm present, and my lack of action is interpreted as a willingness to see him in chains, I fear for the structural stability of my limbs. Besides that, I needed to get through that door, and well, Bakky here was far more suited to utility as a battering ram than I.
I picked the locks and freed the fellow, and it didn't seem to take any convincing to get him on board with the plan to take down the door and remove these temporary tenants from what once must have been a cozy home. Once the messy parts were resolved, I took the extra coin made from reclaiming the peasants' house and gave it off to Bakchuu, expecting the fellow to take his leave and put the coin to use getting home. It seems the big guy feels an obligation to stick around, however, and I'm not one to insult one's customs on these matters.
Besides that, he's got the aim of a hunter and limb removal is one of his favorite pastimes, who wouldn't want a friend like that?
