Born in Karrnath to George and Lynn Sakai, Reileen was the youngest of six children. Her father was a furrier and her mother stayed home to take care of the kids and see to what little education she could offer, so money was always a bit tight. Maybe for this reason or just out of pure malice her older siblings always picked on her and went out of their way to not include her in activities. As she got older this made her angrier and angrier. She learned very early on that the world isn’t a soft place and to survive in it you must protect yourself. You must put up walls and build a tough exterior if you don’t want your soft bits to be hurt or exposed. So instead of taking her siblings bullying and just walking away she decided to fight back. She didn’t win a lot at first, that’s hard to do when you’re 5 and your opponent is 8 or 9, but with each fight she got better and better. One day when she was fighting with her older brother Ben on the edge of town an older lady stopped to watch. Reileen didn’t win that fight, but the woman saw the anger and determination behind each of Reileen’s punches and within her potential to be something bigger than her life could offer. So, the woman whom Reileen grew to call Shichidan Tanaka (Kara Tanaka) took Reileen away from her family to join a new one made of fighters like herself. Rei became a Mukyu or pup in the wolves of Karrnath army. Shichidan Tanaka explained to Rei that the anger inside of her would either hold her back or help Rei rise through the ranks; she would just have to learn to control it. Tanaka decided to train Rei in the style of the great monk warriors in hopes that the process would better help Rei gain control of her emotions.
So, they trained hard for 8 years with Rei slowly but consistently moving up the ranks. All the while her fighting prowess was exceptional but always her anger held her back from being the top of the class. Until at the age of 13 she was finally awarded her first Dan; she lost the title pup and joined the ranks of the Shodan. Getting her first Dan also meant that she would start training with her Kensei weapons; the next step in her monk-esque training. Rei was very excited to start this part of her training, as any 13-year-old would be. So, the evening after receiving her Dan she snuck into the armory and grabbed the first short sword she saw, ran to the far edge of the training grounds, and practiced most of the night with the sword. Right before dawn however Rei found herself surrounded by a pack of feral dogs. Rei, knowing that she had broken several rules with her late-night practice session, readied herself for an attack; believing that calling for help would end up bringing more trouble than just facing the beasts alone. She counted four in total as they circled around her and it wasn’t long before one of them made the first move. The skinniest of the four pounced at Rei but met a quick death at the end of her sword. A little shocked, it took her a second to pull her sword out of the dog’s limp corpse; leaving her back open to attack. She felt teeth dig into her leg and she screamed out in pain. With what vision she had as tears filled her eyes she swung at the dog, but only managed to hit it with the broad side of the sword. This only made the dog tighten its grip on her leg. She screamed as she thrust the sword again this time being more careful with her aim. She felt the dogs grip loosen as her sword found its mark. She dropped to one knee leaning on her sword for support. The last two dogs were pacing about ten feet away to her right. She heard them start growling louder as the scent of fresh blood filled the air. She forced herself to stand back up and gave a growl of her own as she pointed her sword at the remaining dogs. Just as she saw the dogs preparing to lunge at her a dark figure came out of the trees to her left. Almost faster than she could see, the figure charged at the dogs and then two yelps later the beasts lay dead and before her stood none other than Vilkas Dravec himself. Realizing that she was no longer is physical danger she dropped back down to one knee and began to cry harder. She cried over the pain in her leg, her disappointment in her own ability, and fear of what the man in front of her would decide to be her punishment. She bowed her head and tried to stifle her sobs to regain what little pride she could. Vilkas knelt in front of her, ripped a strip of cloth off the end of his shirt and tied it around her injured leg. He then helped her stand up and as she finally looked up to meet his gaze, he removed the ancient necklace from around his neck and placed it around Reileen’s. A man of few words, he said only; "You have the spirit of a wolf with you now, there is no reason to be afraid little Shodan." and patted her head. Vilkas walked Reileen back to camp and made sure that Shichidan Tanaka saw to Rei’s injury before he headed back to his quarters. Neither Rei nor Vilkas ever spoke of that night again, but from that day on Vilkas would always stop by her training sessions as if to make sure that his faith in her hadn’t been misplaced.
Seven years of hard work, painful injuries, and pride filled dedication would lead Rei to earning the rank of Yondan. The rank needed before she could go through the graduation process that would allow her to start fighting alongside her brothers and sisters as a fully-grown Wolf of Karrnath. The graduation itself is broken up into three tasks or trials. Reileen passed the first two with flying colors and was prepared for whatever the third task might be, confident that she would have no troubles with it either. The night of last trial finally arrived and Shichidan Tanaka escorted Rei to a secluded sanctum where she was informed of the true nature of the Wolves along with the unsure probability that she would survive the transition. Overcome with anger at realizing that she had trained her whole life and worked so hard to become a Wolf only to have it all boil down to what she felt was a 50-50 chance at success was just unacceptable. She refused to go through with the final task and after a mumbled apology she ran back to her room packed what few personal items she had and left the only home she had known in 15 years. At first, she had no idea what to do or where to go. The full impact of independence didn’t hit her until that first night sleeping alone under the stars. The quiet of being truly alone sank in and as Rei stared up at the night sky she started to cry. She rolled onto her side and pulled her knees to her chest trying to keep the rest of her from breaking apart like her heart had.
The next morning, she decided to go back to where her family home was. But before she even made it unto her parent’s street she realized that she had no connections with any of the people she might find inside her childhood home. So instead she turned around and started walking. She traveled a lot for about 5 years picking up random jobs here and there; mostly living off the land. Until at the age of 25 she found herself in Thrane and decided to just stay and maybe try to put down some roots. Now a days she mostly just works as a bouncer for any of the local pubs in Flameskeep who have been having issues with rowdy customers, but she is all the time staring out past the walls of Thrane wondering if Shichidan Tanaka would be disappointed by the passive lifestyle she has chosen for herself, and if its too late to change anything.
