A forward-thinking nano who builds tomorrow

Life is war. At least that's what your mentor taught you. Everything that lives is at war with something. Animals war with each other over territory, mates, and food. Plants war with each other over which will occupy particular spaces and who can get the most life-giving energy. Herbivores war with plants; carnivores war with herbivores. Humans war with both, each other, abhumans,* and sometimes visitants.* It's not cruel, it's not crass, it's just the nature of the world.
You were born in the city of Qi in the country of Draolis. Your parents are crafters. Your father is a weaver and your mother a potter, both so successful they can live off of commissions and art pieces sold to the wealthy and members of Council of Spheres, Draolis' ruling council. You had a comfortable childhood and your parents were thrilled when it became obvious you had a natural aptitude with numenera. They were determined to find you an apprenticeship with the greatest Nano they could. When the head of the Order of Truth wasn't able to take you, they found you one with the second greatest, Talos en Carse, second in command of the Order of Truth.
Before your apprenticeship started, your parents insisted that you see more of the world, so they financed a six month trip around the Steadfast. [think of this like bardic knowledge, only related to the people and cultures of the Steadfast. When confronted with a question related to that, you can ask me what you know about it. Or you can use your own player knowledge based on what's in the core book.] During this time, you encountered a man beating his abhuman slave. The beating was so horrific, it almost killed him. You stepped in and knocked the man unconscious with your mindslice and freed the slave, who turned out to be more intelligent than he seemed.
He calls himself Plato and you asked if he wanted to come with you and after your travels, but he declined. You were able to connect him with an underground organization working to help slaves find new lives in new cities/countries. He feels that he owes you his life and wanted to make sure you knew where he lives. Plato took a position with a merchant caravan based out of Far Brohn in the Pytharon Empire (which isn't an empire). He started as a caravan guard, then quickly worked his way up to having his own wagon, which he uses to sell unique jewelry, both items he makes, which he seems to have a real talent for, and unusual items that appeal to him. He is so successful at this, he now sits on the caravan's ruling council and is considered one of his leaders. He has never forgotten his debt to you and will often seek you out when his caravan is in Qi.
While digging for numenera one day a few years back, you found a huge synthstone box. It was about 10'x10'x6' and when you broke it open, you found a young woman. You're not a medic, but even you could tell she was dying of dehydration. Her face was sunken in, her eyes were very bright She looked as if she hadn't eaten in weeks and was barely conscious. The box was completely dark, having no windows and having been buried in the ground. The sunlight obviously hurt her severely, so you put one of the blankets over her head and that seemed to help.
You picked her up and carried her to the handcart you had waiting next to the dig. She weighed next to nothing. You think she may have passed out after you laid her in the cart, so you ran as fast as you could to he Temple of Truth where you knew she would get the best chirurgy (medical) care available. The woman's name is Shenzi and it turns out that she had been held captive in a completely black box for as long as she could remember. She knows nothing about the world and nothing about her captors except they would have her talk to various machines for them.
You'd just finished your apprenticeship and had taken a little time to do some traveling in the Steadfast (the collection of countries including yours)
Your mentor, Talos en Carse, is an Aeon priest in the Temple of Truth [more about this later]. As you've progressed in skills, you've also started working with other Aeon priests and have found work there with three other nanos, one of who is Shenzi, which gives you the opportunity to see how she's doing every day, if you wish. The other two nanos are Max and Zaida, who you don't know very well.
To say en Carse is a strict mentor would be an extreme understatement. He firmly believes that life teaches survival of the fittest and he's determined that you will be the fittest. If he was aware of Nietzsche, he would fully agree with "What does not kill me makes me stronger." And he used it in your apprenticeship. He would wake you at odd hours of the night, jump you anytime during the day until you learned to retaliate instinctively, both physically and with the numenera.
He kept you working your abilities for hours on end. But the worst was the gaslighting he did to make sure you and everyone around him came to believe that he has the most knowledge about the numenera possible. He has a hair-trigger temper which comes out randomly and will land on whoever is around him, which was primarily you. He will be particularly volatile if he thinks anyone is trying to put him down or questioning his ability. People who know your mentor tend to assume you react the same way.
You and the other three nanos you work with have been offered the chance of becoming Aeon priests and joining the Temple of Truth, but before you give your answer either way, the Temple would like you take a wanderjahr, a time when you go explore the world outside of the temple and outside of Qi. You get to keep all the numenera you can find. They're also sending you with a glaive to help protect you and a jack to help you closeted nanos interface with the real world.
