Personal history
As a young boy in the town of Shimmerfall, Zaku had nowhere to call home. The orphanage he had been living in had sadly lost its funding due to the selfish overtaxing of the noble in charge of the area. He had been in the orphanage as long as he could remember. At age 9 he took to stealing the food he needed from the local grocers and maneuvering the alleyways for travel as well as shelter. He had gotten adept at it, but after about a year he had gotten caught by the guard Alden Sharp while trying to steal fish. Learning to avoid the guards was one of the first things you had to learn otherwise you got a beating. This time, however, his target had been a leanly muscled, and elderly fisherman, who went by the name Vince Cooper, that intervened and decided to try and help them both. "I'm up there in years, and since he is clearly a street rat, why dont you let me take him in and try teaching him to be useful instead of a thief?". After thinking it over Alden agreed because he wanted to see as few homeless kids as possible. Alden liked to check in on Zaku frequently to make sure that he wasnt making trouble. The two ended up becoming close friends.
For the next year Zaku learned how to catch and prepare the sea creatures that were native to that area. He even managed to setup a small market stall of his own. He learned what sea shells and coral had value and traded them to the other shop keepers for vegetables and supplies. Sometimes people bought some that had been made into necklaces and bracelets. He even came to see Vince as his father. Life went on like this for 3 more years. He took care of Vince and ended up taking over his stall as well to help ease his burdens. Times got tough for everyone shortly after when the nobles decided to increase the taxes on the townspeople out of sheer greed. It got worse when the guards had to go from keeping the peace to becoming the tax collecting bullies. Some guards had welcomed the change. Eventually Zaku couldn't make the money that was owed to pay the taxes and to purchase food. The other market sellers tried to help as much as they could but they weren't any better off. The first time the guards came to lean on Zaku for money it was Alden that led the group. "Just give me what you have and I'll help you with the rest", he whispered so only Zaku could hear. "Here you go sir", Zaku calmly said as he handed the money over.
Two days later there was a loud pounding at the door. "Ugh, it's so early. Who could it be?", Zaku wondered sleepily as he shuffled towards the door. Once he turned the handle four guards shoved their way into the house. He recognized them as the guards that were there two days prior, minus Alden. "Miserable git!", one of them sneered at him before slapping Zaku across the face. "Did'ja think we wouldn't find out about you not paying the full tax?", another said. They all moved around Zaku boxing him in. "Just leave him alone, please!", Vince begged, having been woken up by the commotion. "Ah shut it you!", bellowed the third as he planted his boot into the older man's sternum, and knocked him across the small room. Coughing and shaking as he landed, Vince passed out. Though brave and strong from his fishing adventures, Zaku was no fighter. Despite his best efforts he couldn't land a single hit on any of the guards. He was quickly reduced to the fetal position as blows from their fists and feet rained down upon him. "This'll teach you not to pay up nice and proper like!", was the only thing spoken to him during the beating. As they were leaving the last one said, "Oh yeah, we got your guard friend taken care of too. Nice and dead he is". Blood thundered in Zaku's ears as his fury peaked. Turning with his battered body to face the guards the last thing he saw was a mailed fist heading towards his face, and then nothing.
Waking up wasn't pleasant. He found himself wrapped with bandages and the stink of homemade medicine coming from them. "Man that smell is awful!", he thought to himself as he attempted to get up. "!!!!" Pain shot through his body as his sides screamed at him from the effort. "How long have I been out? And who treated my wounds? Was it Dad? It must've been." Then remembering that morning he scanned the room hoping to see him sitting in his usual chair instead of a heap on the floor. Seeing no one his panic eased but only slightly. With adrenaline pumping he managed to get to his feet and limp his way to the front door. Grabbing a shirt to cover the majority of his bandages and his fishing spear to lean on he walked outside to get some answers. The market looked the same as usual though the produce stalls were closed early. "Maybe they sold their wares already? Well it is early afternoon." he thought as he limped by. Making his way to the main square he saw a crowd of people near the fountain. It was a high class fountain with clean cut gray stones, and the water came out of 4 fish. Each one faced a cardinal direction and had different gem stones for eyes. Zaku always hated that fountain as it was proof of the nobles' disgust for the lower class. That the only valuable thing in their section of the city was something they could never benefit from financially. As he got closer the crowd dispersed revealing something in the shadow of the fountain. "Is that...is that a body?" Moving closer he stood almost alone in the square, frozen as he recognized who's body it was. "Alden....no...", he whispered as he tried to register what he was seeing. Alden lay on his right side with his back against the fountain's base. He was in a simple tan shirt and black breeches instead of his guard armor. In a daze Zaku looked over him trying to figure out what happened. Bruises around his wrists and ankles, "from ropes?" he wondered. Alden's arms were bent in ways that arms weren't meant to be bent, and his left leg looked like it had been broken at the shin and thigh bone. There were puncture marks on his hands like they had been stabbed with a dagger. His face was cut, bruised, and swollen almost to the point where he wasn't recognizable. Zaku had known him long enough to know that only Alden had a check mark like scar on the inside of his right forearm. Tears welling in his eyes, he collapsed to his knees. He thought back to two days prior when he saw Alden last. "He was beaten and killed...for helping us?", Zaku asked to no one. Unable to come to no other conclusion the tears flowed as he moved closer and held his only friend's lifeless body in his arms. He sat there for hours crying, sobbing, and screaming his grief to no one and everyone in earshot. Many knew and liked Alden in the poorer parts of the city. He treated them fairly. People that walked over to try and see what the commotion was for quickly retreated. Finally at dusk Vince found Zaku at the fountain seemingly dead himself. He had no energy left, and with nothing to keep his wounds from hurting he was wracked with pain inside and out. "You're not dead too, are ya boy?", Vince asked gently. Kneeling down he lightly clapped Zaku on the face to snap him out it. At least enough to get his attention. "It's time to come home now. I need to change those bandages and its almost curfew." Helping Zaku to his feet, Vince led him home.
After getting his bandages changed and wounds cleaned Zaku headed towards his bed. "Ah no, I know you need rest but you probably haven't eaten since you got up. Sit. Eat.", Vince ordered as he placed some fruit, fish, and bread on the table with a cup of water. After eating what he could manage, Zaku finally passed out leaving Vince to worry about things to come. Though he needed it, the time it took for Zaku's wounds to heal stretched their food supply a bit thin. Fortunately Vince could still catch tiny sea creatures. Days past and Zaku still wasnt speaking and barely getting out of bed. Often he cried himself to sleep and Vince's heart broke for his son as he could do little for him. He, too, felt the death of Alden. Alden was the only guard that treated them kindly. Good hearted people were hard to come by in this area. Sitting alone on the pier and watching the sunset he heard someone whistling a cheerful tune. That someone was now approaching where Vince sat, but stopped short. Still facing the ocean Vince chuckled to himself, "Only one man has ever whistled a tune like that in these parts and walked up to this old sea dog. Maurice, I wondered when you would be back."
"HA! Your memory is as keen as ever! Vince, my friend, its good to see you.", Maurice said smiling as he walked forward. Standing to meet him, Vince returned the smile and replied "its a blessing and a curse to be this old and have a good memory, but it's good to see you too". Taking the open spot on the pier, Maurice studied his old friend. "So how have you been, old timer?"
"Well I'm not dead yet, so there's that. Much has happened since you've last been here."
"Really? Anything good?", Maurice asked. Obviously hopeful to hear some good news.
"A little. This whelp from the street tried stealing some of my fish!"
Roaring with laughter Maurice replied, "I'm sure he didn't want to do that a second time! But how was that good?"
As Vince continued to look out at the ocean he continued, "Bah didn't get the chance to teach him the lesson I wanted to. Funny thing is, I took the boy in. Made him useful. Taught him as best I could about fishing and the like. He took to it pretty well. Mostly."
"Oh yeah? You sound like you're proud of him. Though I never pegged you for raising any kids. Especially at your age.", Maurice said with a mischievous grin.
Vince's face spread into a smile, "I am proud of him. He's like a son to me. It ended up being one of my better decisions. Eventually. Having the extra help alone was worth it but we've become family."
"Well then! Maybe I should meet this son of yours!"
His smile fading, "I'm not sure that now is the best time. His only friend was just killed, and for helping us." Vince then told Maurice everything that had happened, and about how the noble's corruption had grown.
"WHAT?!" Maurice's anger was clearly displayed across his face. Composing himself he continued, "My friend, I had no idea that things were this bad here."
Shrugging his shoulders, Vince replied "How could you? Captain of the Crimson Tide. Speaking of, how is that job of yours going?"
Letting out a sigh, it was Maurice's turn to look somber. "I'm making progress but it's going slowly. At this stage it's a lot of waiting. I've even thought about recruiting some younger ones that will carry on if I don't make it to the end."
Vince laughed heartily, "The great Captain Maurice worried about dying? I didn't think it was possible."
"Yeah, yeah. Laugh it up, old timer"
Taking a more serious tone, Vince turned to face Maurice. "You know, it's funny that you mention recruitment."
"What do you mean?"
"The corruption of this town's nobility has cost Zaku practically everything, and I don't have the rest of his life to be around. Right now I can't see a direction he could take and continue living. Not unless he gets out of this place. Can't speak for the boy, but you might find a young recruit in him."
Scratching the back of his head Maurice thought for a moment. "You think so? Can the boy fight?"
Looking back out at the ocean Vince replied, "Hell no. Not a lick. Have fun with that."
"Awful kind of you." Maurice retorted. Sarcasm heavy in his voice before the two of them shared a good laugh. "I'm in town for a couple nights so he has time to meet with me."
"I'll talk to him when he wakes up, but for now it's late and I need to rest. You staying on the ship?"
"For the most part, yes. I have paperwork to finish for tomorrow that needs to be done. The boy can find me on the Crimson Tide. Good night." Maurice stood and headed back to his ship.
Shuffling through the front door Vince couldn't help but smile. If things went well then Zaku would be able to have a better life. Something that he hadn't been able to give him. He had hope for his boy's future instead of worry. "I'm looking forward to what tomorrow brings.", he thought as he dozed off.
Zaku woke that morning to the smell of breakfast. With his stomach grumbling he got out of bed. "Good morning, my boy. It's good to see you up. Hungry?", Vince said as he set the food out and smiling as he did. "Yeah I'm starving. With everything that's happened I've not eaten much. I don't suppose it was all a bad dream?", Zaku asked halfheartedly.
Vince's smile faded at hearing that. "I'm afraid not. How I wish that it was just a bad dream. It's been hard seeing you like this. It does me good to see you with a bit more life in you."
Zaku started feeling guilty. He hadn't considered how his dad was feeling. He had just been drowning in his own pain and frustration. "I'm sorry...dad. Sorry I made you worry so much". "Sorry?", Vince's voice carrying strength that Zaku rarely heard. "Sorry for what? Mourning your friend's death? I know he was your only friend. He was like family. Hell he WAS family. I wish I could've spared you from this experience but the world is not kind and I can't protect you from everything."
Looking down at his plate Zaku replied "Yeah, I suppose you're right."
"Damn straight I'm right. Don't you go feeling guilty for being human. Now I need you to run a little errand for me."
"Uh yeah sure, I'm all finished with my breakfast. What do you need?"
"I need you to deliver this letter to the captain of the ship on the far left side of the docks. Ask for Captain Maurice.", Vince said as he handed Zaku a letter.
"So I just gotta take this letter to Maurice and-"
"Captain. Captain Maurice." Vince corrected. "He's a friend of mine."
"Ok, Captain Maurice. You need anything else?", Zaku asked as he changed clothes.
Cleaning the few dishes they had, Vince smirked where Zaku couldn't see, "No, that should be fine."
Opening the door Zaku was assaulted by the bright sunlight. A welcome change to the rainy weather they had been having. Making his way to the docks, Zaku began pondering his errand. "Since when does dad send letters to people? And where does he know him from? I've never heard him mention any friends." Zaku hoped to find out the answers later but didn't like his odds. "What kind of seal is this? I don't recognize it at all.", he thought as he looked at the wax seal with a couple of what looked like they could be letters. Either way it wasn't something he was familiar with. Approaching the docks Zaku noticed the only ship that Vince could've been talking about. "Oh, wow!"
He knew enough about boats to recognize a long ship when he saw one. The red sails flapping in the wind, and the dark wood body of the ship made for a very impressive sight. The craftsmanship was higher quality than any ship Zaku had seen. Other than a nobles' ship maybe. Eyeing the four ballistae on the side of the ship made him a little nervous. The way the dock was built had them pointing inward towards the small market just a handful of yards away.
Making his way to the gangplank of the ship, he was stopped by the tallest and bulkiest man he had ever seen. At least he thought it was a man. He was easily over 7 feet tall, dark grey skin, and red hair that looked like it was on fire. At least his green eyes seemed normal enough. "Hey, Squishie. Do you have business here?", the stranger asked gruffly. "Um, what? I mean yes. Yes, I have business. I was asked to bring this letter to a Maurice.", Zaku said nervously. "I mean Captain Maurice."
The hulking figure eased his expression. "Oh you were huh? May I see the seal?"
"Here it is.", Zaku said as he held the letter out.
With a sharp intake of breath the giant man's demeanor changed. "I see. Yes, come with me. Sorry for having to question you. Can't be too careful, but friends of the captain are always welcome!"
"But I've never met him. How does that make me a friend?", Zaku asked puzzled.
"True, but you have a letter with the seal of a friend. It's close enough for your business. Ah, but where are my manners? My name is Brugnir. I'm a blacksmith and I am in charge of repairs on the Crimson Tide!", Brugnir said proudly as he offered his hand.
"That makes sense.", Zaku replied extending his own hand to shake Brugnir's. Hoping that it wouldn't be crushed. "My name is Zaku. It's nice to meet you, Brugnir. So this ship is called the Crimson Tide?"
"Sure is, Squishie. I mean, Zaku.", Brugnir answered as he lead the way to the captain's cabin.
"Why do you keep calling me Squishie?", Zaku asked with a touch of annoyance in his voice.
"Oh, sorry. You're soft. Small. Not yet tough. Not enough for the open seas anyway. Not battle either. It's easy to tell.", Brugnir said, "Everyone like that is Squishie."
Grumbling under his breath Zaku decided not to push his luck with the person that could snap him like a twig.
"We're here! Knock and wait for him to call you in. Good luck!", Brugnir said with a smile. "I still have work to do so I'll be off."
"Alright, thanks for your help."
Holding his breath and the letter, Zaku knocked on the door. TUT-TUT TUT
"IT'S OPEN!", came the voice inside.
Stepping through the doorway, Zaku exhaled in relief. The man he saw at the desk looked normal enough. He wore a red and gold velvet long coat over a white shirt with light brown breeches. On his head was a rad and black bandana. His hair was normal too. Dirty blonde hair that is almost shoulder length and a short goatee. He even smiled as he stood up. "Captain Maurice? I've got a letter for you."
"Is that so? Then by all means, make yourself comfortable!", Maurice said still smiling. Pacing the cabin, and reading the letter, Maurice chuckled to himself. "So you're who Vince was talking about."
"Huh? You've heard about me?", Zaku asked uncomfortably.
"Only a little.", Maurice answered as he sat back down in his captain's chair."I hear things have been getting worse since my last visit. You got any thoughts on that?"
"Forgive me, but why would you care about my thoughts on this town?"
"Because I've learned to value the opinion and viewpoint of many in my lifetime. Not just those in power."
"You must have lived some life then. I've not met more than a couple of people like that. Though I'm not as old as you are. No offense."
"True! I have led an interesting life and I have to say that many are like you said. They don't value other's opinions or thoughts unless they have power. Anyway, will you tell me about yourself? How did you come to know Vince?", Maurice asked.
"He seems like a nice enough person. I guess there's no harm in talking a bit.", Zaku thought to himself. "We first met when I was-", Zaku shifted in his chair in embarrassment "trying to steal some of his fish."
"How did that work out for you?"
Zaku told Maurice the story about how he got caught and then taken in by Vince. About the things he had been taught, and about the hardships that they had faced. He tried to talk about Alden as little as possible.
"Thank you for sharing your story with me. Especially since we've just met.", Maurice said softly.
"Well you're a friend of dad's so I figure you can't be that bad. Besides, you seem like you actually cared about the answer."
"Hahaha I see. I'm curious though. You mentioned this guard but it sounds like you didn't want to talk about him. He didn't hurt you did he?", Maurice prompted. **Let's see if this gets a fire lit in the boy. I want to see if he's got any iron in him.**
Zaku's face contorted into a mix of anger and pain. Jumping to his feet, Zaku locked eyes with Maurice and replied "NO! HE NEVER DID! HE ALWAYS HELPED ME AND DAD OUT! HE WAS LIKE MY BROTHER AND....and recently he....was killed." Zaku's surge of energy faded as quickly as it left. Sitting back down, he started to shake.
"I'm truly sorry to hear that. Nothing prepares you for the death of someone close to you.", Maurice said gently. "Will you tell me about him?"
"Why do you care?", Zaku asked bitterly. "It won't bring him back."
"No it won't, but our loved ones live on in our memories and in the memories of others. I understand losing a brother. A friend. If you tell me about him then his memory lives on in my memory too."
"Yeah...I see your point". Zaku took a deep breath and started with whatever he could remember. "His name was Alden Sharp and he was one of the town guard. He was 5 years older than me, but still young for a guard. Alden wanted to be a knight one day. He always tried to embody the principles of a knight...being honorable and just...Everyone in our sector liked him. He was the one of the few guards who didn't treat the lower class like dirt. Sure he had to enforce the rules but he was fair too. He would check in on me after dad took me in like I mentioned before, but I left out that he became part of our family eventually. Sorry, but I just couldn't say it before."
Maurice simply nodded in understanding. "May I ask then, if he was such a good guard and well liked then why was he killed? What happened?"
Taking another breath to try and steady his nerves, Zaku continued "The guards I mentioned earlier that came and wanted tax money. He was with them, but he was going to pay the difference in the taxes owed versus what we could pay. Someone found out that we didn't pay all of the taxes and those guards that came with him the first time....they...they..." anger rising in his chest once more Zaku exploded, "THEY KILLED MY BROTHER FOR HELPING US! FOR HELPING ME! THOSE CORRUPT PIECES OF TRASH! I WISH THEY WERE DEAD! THE ONE IN CHARGE IS NO BETTER! THAT BASTARD HATES THE LOWER CLASS AND HAS ALWAYS TREATED US HORRIBLY! I WANT THEM DEAD! THEY...they...killed my brother and I couldn't help him for once. I can't do anything to avenge him. I'm....not strong enough."
Zaku buried his face in his hands, unable to look Maurice in the eye.
"First of all", Maurice started as he pulled out a couple of glasses and 2 different bottles from under his desk, "a drink to Alden's memory. The memory of a good man in a shitty town." He then handed Zaku the glass with a liquid that had a light gold color to it while taking the darker brown liquid filled for himself and downed it.
"Um what's this?" Zaku asked.
"Oh its an elven alcoholic beverage. I know you're not old enough to drink and probably can't handle much but that is much lighter than what im drinking. Sweeter too. You seem like you need something with some kick and this is just the right amount for someone of your age."
"I..Ok thank you." Zaku looked into his glass before drinking. **To Alden. My brother. Ill be strong someday. I swear it.** Then finishing his drink Zaku felt a bit better, if not a bit strange at the same time.
"Second of all, I must ask how much do you know about the Empire, Zaku?"
Trying not to burp, Zaku replied, "Just that they have something to do with our town but lower class citizens aren't told much at all. Why?"
"Well", Maurice starts to consider his words carefully, "They are actually the ones in charge here. The noble that people think is in charge of Shimmerfall actually works for them."
"Why are you telling me this?"
Sighing and leaning back in his chair, Maurice continues, "Because I'm fighting them. I'm fighting against their corruption and the hold it has on our country. On our world. I have been thinking about recruiting more people who would want to help do something about it. Judging from what I've heard from you it seems like a safe bet that our interests align. What do you say? You want to be stronger? You want to fight to protect the people like yourself that have been cast to the wayside? If so then I'd welcome you aboard the Crimson Tide."
At first Zaku thought he was joking, but saw that the friendly captain's face was no longer smiling, but very serious. "I...um..I want to but-", Zaku started but was interrupted.
"It's ok. Give it some thought. Talk to Vince. I'll be leaving tomorrow morning so you've got time.", Maurice said as his smile returned.
"I'll...Ok.", Zaku said still not sure what to think.
"And if you will be so kind, bring this letter from me to Vince". Maurice then quickly wrote a line or two onto a piece of paper, sealed it, then handed it to Zaku. "I'll see you soon. To say goodbye when I leave at the very least. No hard feelings no matter what you decide. Off you go."
His walk home felt like it took longer than the walk to the Crimson Tide. "Join Captain Maurice? Fight against the Empire? I can't fight. What good am I going to be?", He thought to himself.
Walking through the front door he called out, "I'm home! And there is a return letter for you."
"Oh thank you, my boy." Vince said as he took the letter. After reading it he chuckled softly. "I guess you made some sort of impression on Maurice. What do you think about his offer?"
"I...it sounds good. I mean I'd like to be able to help people like us, but I can't just leave you here."
Vince walked over and put his hand around Zaku's shoulder in a half hug. "Zaku, I think this is the best option for you. In fact, I'm the one who suggested it. I don't see a life for you here. Especially not after how bad things are getting. I've always wanted a better life for you than this. You've been a help and a blessing to this old man and its more than I thought I'd ever get at the end of my life. If you want to be strong then he will teach you. If you want to go then go with my blessing. Go be the man I know you are. Show the world that there is still some good in it that's willing to stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves. If that's what you want. I'll support you either way but I hope you'll consider it. It will be dangerous but it'll be a better life for you than staying here. And don't worry about me. I'll be fine."
Turning to hug the man who took him in and gave him a home. Who taught him so many things he never would have known before. Zaku decided that he didn't want others to suffer the way that he and his family had. "Ok dad. I'll do it."
"Tonight I'm cooking your favorite so take this bit of money and get the fruits and fish that I'll need."
Zaku ran off towards the market to just get there in time to get what he needed. After a nice goodbye dinner with his father, Zaku settled into bed. Thoughts of what was to come filling his mind. "I guess things will be different from now on", he thought as the day caught up to him and he fell asleep.
That morning Vince helped Zaku gather his things and walked him to the Crimson Tide. Maurice was there to greet them. "Vince! Zaku! Glad to see you both before I leave. Not to be indelicate, but do you have an answer for me?", Maurice asked.
"Yeah. I've decided to take you up on your offer."
"Then head aboard the ship. We leave in a few minutes."
Facing his father one last time Zaku gave him the biggest hug he could muster. "I love you dad. Thank you for everything." Tears streaming down their faces the father and son hugged each other for the last time.
"I love you too son. It's I who should be thanking you. Be careful. Be strong. And listen to Maurice."
Sniffling a bit Zaku replied, "Yeah I will." Then Zaku turned and walked up the gangplank and aboard the Crimson Tide.
"You going to be ok here?", Maurice asked.
"I'll manage.", Vince replied.
"You want me to do something about what's going on here?"
"No. To win the war you must win battles, and this place is a small battle. I can manage things from here if they get much worse."
"How can you-", Maurice started.
"I'm old not dead. I still have contacts and allies of my own. Just take care of my boy, Maurice."
"I will, I promise."
The two friends said their good byes and Vince watched as the Crimson Tide sailed away with his son off to a better life. One with more options and more of a future. Sadness and pride filled Vince's heart. "Well then", he thought as he headed back home, "I guess I'd better start preparing."
