Colonel, Philippine Army 54th Engineering Brigade
Next to Sabrina sat Colonel Cesar Salangsang, commander of the Philippine Army 54th Engineering Brigade. He was 52 years old, and well-liked by his men. At 5’4” he was the shortest person in the room, but he radiated an intense vibrancy and strength. His toothy smile was how most of his men thought of him, but then, most of his men gladly and literally moved mountains for the man. Woe be unto those who were only there to mark time. Unlike so many other officers, Cesar did not berate or curse those who fell short. His glacial stare of disappointment and pity usually sufficed. When it didn’t, enthusiastic ‘encouragement’ from the wayward soldier’s more enlightened fellows would help him find his way to the light. His men were immensely proud that their brigade always had the best performance ratings.
Today, the smile was etched on his face like a bas-relief, but there was more than a tinge of darkness. He had had a very large family that included both his and his wife’s parents, surviving grandparents, as well as his own 9 children, and six grandchildren and an extended family whose annual reunions brought an ever more dizzying explosion of children, teenagers and family of all ages. He loved his work, but his family was what he’d lived for. He and units of his brigade had been building a forward operating base on one of the Southern Philippine islands. It was for a renewed effort to project force against Islamic insurgent groups as well as Communist rebels. Construction had been taking place under regular fire from snipers and mortar fire. Cesar had frequently been seen driving construction equipment and directing the efforts of his men. He led by example. Now he was here, with the rest of his men, and like so many others, with none of his family.
