This a place where a halfling (or someone who looked like a human child) would be brought back to from other places as a slave? I'm thinking that maybe instead of halfling villages, they could have been human villages and we just happened to be halflings that lived nearby, and my character would have been taken as a human child slave, and lived for a time as a child slave taking and would take care of the children (i'm thinking this is where she would have learned her first illusions- to calm the more scared or upset of the children) but was ultimately found out for what she was when she didn't grow. She was then taken to be a sex slave for wealthy people who had proclivities towards children but couldn't actually have child sex slaves. After 10 years of slavery she was rescued by the dwarf sisters when the circus was visiting the town of one such person. When the guards caught up to the circus to see if they had stolen her away, she hid in a box and illusioned herself as cooking herbs (since she knows herbs so well), fooling the guards.


She'll have been with the circus about 10 years now and the dwarf sisters are the only ones who know the whole story (assuming the circus has been around that long, can edit). This is why she's always high- to deal with the ptsd. I'm thinking as part of her act in the circus she could also offer a free lunchtime children's show (she'll have a special soft spot for children). There are acutally alcohol/addict homebrew mechanics with a dice you roll secretly when you encounter a trigger (only the dm knows) and if you fail you relapse. I'm thinking it could be modified for ptsd- if i'm not high and i encounter a trigger, i'm rolling with disadvantage and if i fail i go into a thousand yard stare. If a child is in trouble she'll roll with disadvantage to blindly rush in and try to save them.
